Welcome back to knifehog.com, I'm Sarah and today we'll be looking at one of the best
hunting knives on the market, Puma's stag handle Skinner.
Puma started making knives way back in 1769 and that wealth of experience really comes
through in the design of the skinner. Featuring a sleek upsweep blade, a polish brass finger
guard and a beautiful staghorn handle, the Puma skinner has both style and substance.
As the name implies, the Puma Skinner is first and foremost a hunting knife. The long upswept
blade and narrow point are tailor made for skinning game. But, the blade is thick and
tough enough to function as a fully rounded hunting knife. Even if you're not into hunting,
you'll still want to check this knife out. Its high quality construction and classic
good looks makes it an ideal showpiece for any collector.
The business end of the Puma Skinner is a 4.7" sweeping blade of German Solingen stainless
steel. It also has full tang construction, essential for any fixed blade worth its salt.
Jipping and a thumb groove are cut into the lower back side of the blade, perfect for
when you need to press down or want extra control on your cuts. Believe me, you wouldn't
want your hand sliding onto this blade. To prevent that, Puma Skinner comes complete
with a stylish brass finger guard. The handle is 4.7" in length and is constructed of staghorn
riveted to the tang. Puma includes a black nylon belt sheath to store and carry the knife.
We here at Knifehog are extremely impressed with the Skinner's blade. It's razor sharp
but, more importantly, the German steel keeps its edge even after repeated use. The staghorn
has a classic aesthetic appeal that's just lacking in synthetic handles. However, there
is a give and take with the handle material. Staghorn is not as easy on the hands as some
modern handle material, so your hands may feel a little raw after prolonged use of the
knife. Also, the grip is solid but it would have been nice if the handle had a little
bit more thickness. If you're going to use this knife, we recommend gloves.
Knifehog gives the Puma Skinner 3.5 out of 5 stars.
