We're working on Chapter 6, Slides 11 and 12, looking at
arrangement of...
a facility arrangement here, looking at departments.
We're going to arrange a 6 square
departments on a grid,
like the one shown on the next slide to meet the objective listed.
Department A needs to be near Department E.
It also needs to be near department D and C.
While Department B needs to be near C and D, and department F needs to be
near D. Now you can
go back to this slide, as you need to get everything in, but let's take a look at
this grid here.
Looking at this, we're going to be taking a look
at nearness and who can be by what and with this we're going to
make the assumption
that we have to have doors available
and we're not gonna go kiddy corner
from, say, this side to this side.
What we're going to do instead, is just say
that they can go up or down
with that.
So, looking at this,
we can take a look
at who needs to be near what, and this is actually a logic problem,
and I for one use a lot of trial and error.
Now this again is a very simple problem
with just 6 departments that we are llooking at,
but when you're taking a look
at cubicles and sharing computers and printers and everything else
and you have hundreds or thousands of people, there are computer programs that
you can use,
but you need to know the basic information, the basic understanding on
how to do this.
So, let's start off
that we have Department A.
Let's put department A here.
Department A needs to be near department D,
E, and C. Oh, wait, we said we can't go kiddy corner, so that's not going to work.
So, let's try this again.
I know that department A has the most requirements, so let's put department
A in
the middle here.
It needs to be near Department E,
D,
and C.
So far, so good. I have the doors on either side, it works.
So, let's move on to department B.
It needs to be near both
C
and D.
That worked.
Department B is by D, Department B is by C
F needs to be by department... oh, wait a minute, F needs to be
by department D.
Only place I have for F is over here,
and F can't be there cause it does not work. I need to start
all over again. So, let's get rid of our Departments in here, and try again.
I am going to keep A
here.
Let's start again with E here, let's put D
down here, and C over here, and see how this works.
B needs to be near C and D.
B is near C, B is near D. E needs to be... or F needs to be near D,
that works,
and E needs to be near F.
Notice it took me a coupla tries,
trial and error, but I was able to follow the requirements
and have who needed to be near who.
This is chapter six,
Slides 11 and 12, looking at arrangement or layout of a department.
