The Ministry of Education wants to match at-risk students with mentors,
iwi or alternative education centres to keep them at school and learning.
It's a move the Ministry hopes will counter the current practice
of dumping those students in correspondence school.
The Ministry of Education released the findings
of their review about the NZ Correspondence School.
We agree with the review findings
because we've long been encouraging those students
who don't learn well in schools.
There are 27,000 students in the Correspondence School,
most of whom were expelled from school.
It's difficult for some with no community support.
The Ministry of Education
declined to talk to Te Karere today
about this topic.
They have suggested that the Correspondence School
design a new system which places students with mentors.
We've already started some pilots, and there is some value there.
According to the review, distance learning is not suited
to students who are at risk of underachieving.
For some of them, this system is good,
because they aren't getting anything from mainstream schooling.
Here it's a bit different,
as they don't have to sit in one room for a long time.
There will be a new pilot programme launched next year.
