Hi, I'm Rachel with ALIS,
the Alberta Learning Information Service.
Are you wondering how to get work experience?
Experience is important,
because experience basically shows
that you've taken the time to learn a particular skill,
or learned something related to that skill,
and have genuine interest in this job.
You can get experience through volunteering,
job shadowing, on the job training
and apprenticeships.
Get out and meet people in the industry,
talk to them about opportunities,
look at what your interests are
and what you're capable of doing.
Look at your skills,
and take a look at what you enjoy doing.
By volunteering,
it shows that you contribute to your community willingly,
and you've taken that step to engage yourself
in the task or in the job.
Find out more about the on the job training opportunities
in your community.
Take a look around and see what's available.
On the job training can be helpful for you,
because you can train in the actual environment
that you would be working in.
You can see the details
and tasks that are included in that job,
and whether or not you like those things.
Job shadowing is when you follow someone around at work
and learn their skills and duties throughout the day.
You can do this for a certain period of time,
and you gain skills through doing this.
An apprenticeship is when you're combining classroom work
with on the job training.
Apprenticeship helps you gain experience
because you're getting practical work
with theory based knowledge as well.
The final way that you can gain work experience is let everyone
know that you're looking for work,
and let them know what type of work you're looking for.
Let them know what skills you already have,
and what you're willing to do.
By doing this, you're putting the word out
and you're spreading a rumour about yourself,
a positive rumour about you and your career.
Volunteering, job shadowing
and apprenticing are great ways to gain experience
and make you more valuable to potential employers.
