Hi. My name is Dr. Debra Durham and I'm running in IndieGoGo campaign
for project called CAMP for chimps.
it's the compassion in action mushroom project
like this chimp
from Uganda
I wanted to tell you a little bit more about the campaign because I really hope
that smart, passionate people like you will become part of the project
through your support,So here goes. There are a a few things
I wanted to tell you about CAMP.
ONE: CAMP 't is a project that is being run in conjunction with
chimpanzee sanctuary and wildlife conservation trust,
an NGO in Uganda. CAMP is one of
their programs and I'm a partner who's trying to help them getit off the ground
CS&WCT
is an awesome organization. In addition to running
Ia chimpanzee sanctuary, they do a lot of conservation work on the ground
and they also work with communities
to help reduce human wildlife conflict.
The second thing I want to tell you about CAMP is that CAMP is part a
programs reduce human wildlife conflict
was a little bit that you might wanna know about human wildlife conflict in
Uganda
especially where affect him and the where people live
close a chimpanzee habitat you can sometimes be easy
conflict know this might be difficult to understand because we don't have
and it's in our backyard just imagine the situation where are you in your
neighbors don't know we see idea
II miss can be the same way I've perfume in my back on select
for example I sometimes chimpanzees scan
a rate cuts or sometimes
all want to use chimpanzee have attacked for their own purposes
don't really like this it doesn't work for them right
habitat destruction have it back aggregation
or sometimes going into the forest to do things that cause other
I conflict for example making bank I'm the forest
an usually the biggest problem it's what goes into the forest
and that happens snares and a lot of time snares which
art set for chimpanzees can trap
a chimpanzee and million for them sometimes even
to bear my so can't is
art a larger programs
to reduce human wildlife conflict the everything
I much tell you about cam is that camp focuses
on on turn it in sustainable my belief
its and this is where the mushroom project
part I've can't come in San so
to give people always have earning money that down
involve string haven't packed disturbing have it at are going into the forests
you engage in activities that might cause conflict for
expanding an
lawn nearing for other forms of Agriculture
you'd like to try something brand new home
mushroom farming why mushroom farm
well there's a couple of reasons well
the most important want the most important that measure
farming has a small footprint mushroom sheds
can grow a lot of the vertically
so the sheds and take up roughly meter so on the ground
and some bolt raise for my growing passions are inside the ship
so instead I'm clearing more and more lenient grow more and more
food can is taking
forming ok words with mushrooms Worthing
I'd like to tell you about camp is that mushrooms are super healthy
so me it's pretty common in Uganda are corn
no corn is kinda crap
food not only does it take time man at tonic water
have really gotten missions mushrooms on the other hand
aren't rich its and I'll post more on the camp website
about nutritional value mushrooms thing
but I'm are you about camp it's the p.m. is
real the re so not only does that leave the poorest intact
yea on it also
has a really small footprint its shade grown
you know mushrooms like she mushrooms like and
their wet and so in the forest habitats for chimpanzee its live
also upgraded awesome place to be a musher
and so she'd grown these have a small
physical friend on a relatively small water track
because it's forests in Uganda get quite a bit
quite a bit have rain and so
technology that will be using grow mushrooms has a small footprint
to really green project this its when clearing
Wenger rights or other
outcrops and so it's a green card
and up I don't think I want to tell you about can
and why I love can is that in addition to being a scientist
I'm totally committed to a life of compassion
and that means that I want solutions that are
win-win-win. And, CAMP is just that
We're not trading the lives of one animal for another
asking chimps to pay the price for people
or for people to lose out here. We've got everybody
winning. So CAMP
gets a big A+ from me for being a compassionate project.
So we've got an alternative sustainable livelihoods program
that focuses on a green technique,
that will empower local people to have a sustainable source of income,
reduce human wildlife conflict with chimps, provides nutritious food
And, I also want to let you know that CAMP focuses on women.
A lot of research shows that when
integrated conservation development programs
focus on the livelihoods of women,
that the benefits reach further.
Women who have micro-businesses
tend to use that money to support their children,
to support their families, and to support their communities.
Some of the year I employment opportunities
and educational opportunities for women
are limited in Uganda. I'll be honest about that
This is something they can do while they stay close to home.
It doesn't require a lot of manual labor,
and it doesn't require advanced education
or any specialized vocational skills.
The little boost that they need will learn how to grow and take care
of mushrooms, how to preserve them, and how to sell them
is what CAMP is on the ground to do.
So if you would like to support camp for one or all these reasons
whether you love chimpanzees, or, like me, you think
mushrooms are delicious, or you're a compassionate person
who cares about all these things, I'd love to have your support for CAMP
so click below to like this video
and head on over to the IndieGogo page to make your contribution.
You can also share this with your friends and family, your co-workers
and help us get the word out.
I really appreciate all of your time today,
and the things that you do to help animals and the earth.
and I hope will become part of the CAMP project
and become a CAMPer! Thanks very much.
