The Appropriations committee meeting this morning was one that was very interesting.
We had a House Bill, House Bill 1269, that was one that would place Indiana in a compact
with other states and if approved by congress then the state of Indiana would have total
control over Medicare and Medicaid; ten billion dollars worth of spending in Medicare and
five billion dollars worth of spending in Medicaid. This is a real concern to me because
with the state of Indiana having control of that, the cost will fall on Indiana. Not the
entire cost because they’ll still use federal monies as much as they can but they will be
administering that here in the state of Indiana which really concerns me because we’ll have
people unable to receive care. Either that or we’ll have a better program, as the author
of the bill said and we’ll be getting people coming from other states to Indiana because
they’ll get better care. I don’t really believe that’s going to happen, I think
what’s going to happen is we’re going to see the people of this state get worse
care. The bill was amended in committee to make it a little better, and that was they
took Medicare out of it. So it’s just Medicaid now but that’s enough that really concerns
me. That the people who depend on Medicaid in this state are going to put in a position
that they are going to be controlled by the state of Indiana and that will be a real problem
for not only the people who depend on Medicaid but I think for the cost of providing Medicaid
in this state.
