back on the program is former Ohio Republic republican congressman Bob ney
he represented Ohio's 18th congressional district from 1995 until November of
2006
when he resigned after pleading guilty to charges of conspiracy in making false
statements
in relation to the jack Abramoff Indian lobbying scandal
he spent seventeen months in prison bob is also the author of the book
sideswiped lessons learned courtesy of the Hitmen
capitol hill which we've talked about extensively on the show it's great as
always to have you I'm gonna open up with a broad question which is
in watching republicans and old the shutdown the way that they did
and Obamacare the way that they are do you think that this is good or bad
political strategy
long-term almost that long term might have had its short term gain
course shutdown didn't have any type short term gain I
because we're Speaker John Boehner did was 16
day the whole fiasco he could have done birthday which was to throw something up
for a vote
both parties but we're governments over but the long-term strategy is actually
very that Republican Party
if you go back to newt gingrich days when they had the government shutdown it
was over a big picture
%uh issue which was you know the generic way
that the budget was handle the future mortgaging
up people so livelihoods in futures you know the whole
lined it was given at that time but in this case it was a specific narrow issue
up shutting the government down
over one thing Obamacare so not only did the republicans lose the big picture
Center crews cut step by its own party
is Mitch McConnell republicans gave Harry Reid the Democratic leader the
ability to
to bring the cloture vote which allowed to vote to remove
what the house it done with Obamacare so they lost all the way around but there's
a hundred ways
to skin a cat I was in congress they could do it 100 different ways to the
appropriations process
they don't like Obamacare they totally lost sight David
the big picture and went after one specific I am which might have had a
short term gain making a tea party happy but it hurt him at all or
so you you as well as anyone else knows the inner workings
love what goes on behind the scenes when thinking about whether to oppose here or
accept their
I assuming and correct me if I'm wrong
that it wasn't completely unpredictable the way that the public reacted to the
shutdown
or or was it i mean it seem so hard for me to believe
that it came as a total surprise to republican leadership including john
bainer
but at the same time if they had known this is the way it would work out
it's hard to imagine they would choose this well
this was not originally I think the intention I think it's Speaker John
banners mind
now he's gonna get some lip service he was going to
led around the sewers cruised on his deal and
set senator crews but I don't think that
that john bainer was going to head towards an actual shutout
I think he a lip service to thirty or forty members in his own caucus
but the end of the day John bears leadership so weak
made worse by you have an accident in Middleboro that's where he tried to
maneuver cell
during the services are trying to the moderates in this caucus
and I think then he his staff realized
either had to go along with this initiative to shut down
or there was only about 40 bucks may be calling for a new speaker's election
will be quicker than john bainer want it
so I think it did come as a a shock I don't think it was his original game
player
then of course he does it for sixteen days area was a government which she
could have done
16 days earlier I've been talking for a little while about what I kinda see is
the three
I branches are the modern Republican Party and you have kind of like the Tea
Party
small-government low the side which is not particularly
religious although some elements are you have the religious
evangelical branch of the republican party and then you have those most in
line with like a Mitt Romney for example who are more the pro-business keep taxes
low
branch do you think that that is and accurate depiction
love the Republican Party bearing in mind that there is some overlap
or or do you see it a little differently no i i think is accurate
description the Republican Party is it exists today some up
people were overlap but i think is pretty accurate description okay so is
there one particular group there
that you think is doing the most damage to the chances the republicans in 2014
and 2016
and if you had to pick one of those groups which probably has the best chat
chance at having
the broadest appeal well the problem
is with the with the damaged section is the Tea Party
in now first quality party it was a strong group in anybody that
underestimate the
you know solid what they could do but now the Tea Party's venturing into
primary
against Republican at the end of the day a bit
that's when this will all cut loose because Republican structures not going
to tolerate
when after their own or if they do they not very much let where you at me
fifty or sixty people in a minority new
win one once in a while and they are
purists word does Republican Party want to have the control
the House the Senate maybe the White House and not be quotes ok sure as to
follow what forty-five people
in that house caucus police to the Tea Party if
it john bainer continues to do what he's done is speakers
image because of the said he's a Republican Minority Leader over there
but bainer continues to do this I thought at all with your day to keep his
speakership anyway
but it but he will have fractured allies that office so much you can surprise her
the group is gonna survive but they is going to group today
I in this like the dirty work moderates but it's a group that will be
know they're very conservative on fiscal side but they'll be
basically moderates in there are also going to be people that are willing to
to reach across the aisle what so I started early word
to to a have an interaction with the other party
you know to secure some boats allotted case we get it with the help America
Vote Act study or here
honey a precedent even under newt Gingrich in bill clinton
to get some things done alright so last thing aside from
moderates broadly speaking being having the best chance for the republican party
in the next couple have elections
if right now you were advising the Republican Party
on specific issues is there a particular issue you think republicans should drop
for their advantage and is there a particular issue you think they should
focus on
well they they should at dropped the opposition to
immigration reform that's the issue where they should take a cue
especially for baby from senator Rubio is a
you know that you know backer take a cue from that in on that one
make something happen people were here make something happens
on the one issue that they can do something about it and they will gain a
lot I think your support
is that this law issue: but not just take it away as saying that
they have to be understanding there are people that knew are in need in eighty
safety net but to do this in a very balanced way
to get a handle on the budget that should be there moderate they do that
the moderates will work with the Conservatives and that's the point
yes I want to make the monitors will accept people well
to the right to the left what the republican party also wants to avoid a
since when is it always a litmus test
the white beaded chain go to war the pup this have to go to work
so I think they need to do to you know compromise on immigration issue
stay away from up being bloodthirsty I want to costly
engage in a in a war somewhere can republicans not get away from issues
like marriage equality and abortion which for the first time in history both
have overwhelming support from americans because they've depend on those to
fundraise in key areas
I think that big weather %uh Campari niece ish
yourself on is this sh you know if you if you want to come in the republican
party has to be a chef
some will be at the lab to write some in the middle but their party tends to want
to
everybody be a your sure a slight lead means landings and and that can't happen
so they need open that run 10 up as far as the
is the a Merry screen correspondent I think they're actually you're seeing
them let that
at issue go itself he the abortion
issue there will be people pro choice or pro a
you know crew life and they can all be it are the party I think the big thing
is republicans
need to not put people on probation for their views and then thrown out of the
party they don't like them
alright former Ohio republican congressman Bob ney the book is
sideswipe lessons learned courtesy of the Hitmen
