On the eastern end of the Biloxi peninsula, lies a neighborhood known
as Point Cadet, or as commonly referred to as just "the Point."
This neighborhood is the center of the Biloxi maritime industry and is one most
ethnically diverse regions on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. On the Point,
one is conscious of the proximity to the Gulf of Mexico. The elevation is low
and storms surges are especially unforgiving here. Buildings, animals, people
all that thrives here is somewhat amphibious, capable of inhabiting
the adjacent worlds of both land and sea. This is a place where cultures
mingle too. Stores catering to the Hispanic community are a testament to the latest
evolution of a neighborhood where black, white, and Asian families have lived
close to one another for decades. This neighborhood has seen rapid changes.
The flashing neon signs of casinos tower in the distance above rows shotgun houses.
WIth increasing casino development and gentrification, some say
that the unique culture of the Point is in danger. Hopefully, the city will realize the worth
of this diverse neighborhood and work to preserve it.
