Over the next eight months, about 5 million animal specimens preserved in alcohol will
be moved from the Ruthven Museums Building to a new off-campus storage facility.
Diarmaid O’Foighil: So this move is designed to update the collection and placement of
all of our ethanol collections and are being physically moved from Central Campus, from
Ruthven, to this new dedicated facility of Varsity Drive. Essentially, basic standards,
safety codes, for storage of flammable material has changed comprehensively, and the storage
facilities in Ruthven no longer meet code.
The University has invested very heavily in operating this facility in Varsity Drive and
we look forward to having our viable research collections be well-housed for the next 80
years here.
