Correspondent: Bus drivers know first hand the phenomenon of children destroying property on school buses.
After all, who can keep an eye on fifty children while driving a bus without the supervision
of teachers or parents?! To overcome this problem and allow the bus drivers to be focused on the road
rather than on what is happening in the back seat, the Regional Council of Southern Sharon, decided to
install a pilot camera system that transmits real-time images from the bus directly to this office.
There, the Director of Transportation can sit and watch the students and the drivers as if he were on the bus.
Yakov Shehinu, Director of Transportation Southern Sharon Local Municipality:
I've got two cameras capturing the interior of the bus; one in the front watching the full length of the bus
and one in the back streaming video of what is going on in the back of the bus. A third camera is located in the
front of the bus and faces the road to monitor driving behavior. Friction between the students has decreased;
vandalism on the bus has dropped dramatically.
Correspondent: You can search the system for recorded video and you have the option to go back to any time
and date and find out who was responsible for the corruption/vandalism and, if necessary, pass the evidence
to school principals and parents.
Correspondent: How have the cameras impacted the atmosphere on the bus?
Yoel Aharon, Bus Driver: The children are less wild, they have calmed down
and now behave the way they are supposed to behave on a busā they sit down, put on
their seat belts and in general have quieted down. There is less pressure and much less chaos.
Correspondent: How were things prior to the system?
Yoel Aharon: There were a lot of problems, children would fight, jump around,
climb on top of each other, throw things, open windows and throw things out of them.
Today this happens less - much less!
Moti Delijo, Head of the Southern Sharon Regional Council: This system reduces violence dramatically
and more importantly, it reduces vandalism. In the past we have had damage caused by children,
whether done knowingly or unwittingly. Nowā every child that causes damage we can see,
contact his parents and take necessary measures. 27 00:02:10,100 --> 00:02:15,000 Correspondent: In parallel, there is a built-in GPS system that can display on the Council City Map
where exactly the bus is at any given time.
Yakov Shehinu: āI can now see here, the bus number, the speed and its direction of movement,
if the driver violates the law, drives above the speed limitā here, right now this bus is driving on an inter-city road at 61 KM/h.
Correspondent: Here in the South Sharon area, this pilot was crowned a success and the council
is now considering expanding the project to additional buses.
