Hey youtubers, I'm Laura Stephenson. I'm the author
of The Complete Guide to Being Evil, a fantasy novel. I've been interested in getting
into vlogging for a while
and now I've got a nice new camera that I got for my Kickstarter project
so here I am. If you watched that video you may have noticed the new addition to my books
over here.
It's The Adventures of Little Critter. Yes, contrary to what my camera believes
I am not a teenager. I'm an adult
woman with a 4 year old kid. Anywho.
What epic topic should I discuss in this, my
very first vlog (that's not specifically for my Kickstarter,
though link in the doobly-doo). Should it be the government shutdown,
the possible fall of the republican party,
the new healthcare bill, how I met
the fantasy giant Brandon Sanderson? No,
I think I'm gonna make my first video about Twitter. I held out getting a Twitter account until the...
the 20th, I think, mention of how
invaluable a tool it is to budding authors.
So now I have one. And I finally figured out how to
find people who read but don't write fantasy.
Of course I followed a bunch them, and what happens?
my account gets suspended. I was cited with
aggressive following and had to check a box saying I would cease doing so
in the future
as it is against Twitter policy, which I
perused. Thou shalt not 'aggressively follow' ie
follow more than a hundred people a day, as it
points to using auto-follow software,
which doth be forbidden usage of Twitter.
Okay I didn't actually print it out. These are my notes
for what to say. See? First I didn't follow over a hundred people
in one day, I followed 25 tops.
Gosh. Second I found those people
through painstaking hash tags searches which
I very cleverly figured out how to do on my
own, not through some auto follow sites. Third, I didn't even know that was
against the rules.
(I find Twitter very confusing for someone in her mid-twenties.)
I confess, I used JustUnfollow one time,
but I won't anymore I promise. And forth,
who are you, Twitter, to be deciding what a valid use of your
program is? You threatened to permanently suspended by
account if I repeated my behavior, ie
using your technology in an intelligent manner to reach
an audience. Did you really just want your site to be a place where people
could find their friends and exchange
basically text messages using their giant computers?
Or is the relationship between an author and her
fan base, or the building of that relationship
or that fan base really so repugnant
to you? Still wondering what my exact
age is? Will Laura learn how to use Twitter
properly? Did she just say doobly-doo? Is she a
nerdfighter? Tune in next time on Friday.
