Hi YouTube, Hikosaemon here
Today I want to talk about something a bit different
Since starting videos, there are lots of people asking me how I learned Japanese
Also, some people who are a bit depressed at their lack of English have left comments saying "sorry"
There's really no need for that at all
One question that has been coming up is "how did you pick up Japanese?"
And another question that often comes up is "How could I go about learning English in the same way?"
Well, I'm not an English teacher
But, I do have experience as someone who has learned Japanese as a foreign language
And based on that experience, the advice that I would give
I have 3 points of advice for those looking to improve their English
The first of these is to try as much as possible to immerse yourself in the environment of the language you are learning
That was really hard for me to do in NZ
I would borrow video cassettes of Japanese dramas, go to a Japanese karaoke bar
Practice singing Japanese songs
I made Japanese friends
In NZ, doing that took a lot of effort
But in the end, I was able to use Japanese regularly
In that environment, I started to process thoughts in Japanese
Thinking of that, Japan, by comparison
Everywhere there are English DVDs, English tv shows, foreigners you can meet
I think there are many more opportunities to use English in Japan than there was for me to use Japanese in NZ
And when you get into that environment, no matter how exhausted you get from all the effort, try not to take breaks from it
When you take a break, it is like getting off a treadmill doing exercise, and eating some cake
The whole benefit of the exercise is immediately lost
When you cut back into Japanese in the middle of trying to speak English
It is just like eating that cake
No matter how tough it is, in the beginning, you should try to make it so you have no escape from that environment
And just by necessity, you will find your English ability develops just like muscles do after exercise
My second point of advice is this:
And this is something that I think Japanese really are missing most in their English studies
That is, "don't try to say what you can't say"
Whenever Japanese say they want to speak English, they invariably begin by trying to memorize as much vocabulary as possible
In fact, rather than focussing on vocabulary
Thinking of why they want to learn so much vocab
It is because when you want to say something that is equivalent to this in Japanese, you look for the English words that match the Japanese
And construct sentences in this way, just like exams at school ask you to do
Everyone is obsessed with asking "how do I say this Japanese in English?"
However, when people actually speak a language, they think and process EVERYTHING just in that language
Of course, we can't think using words we don't know
If we tried to switch every word one by one between two languages as we speak
It would be impossible to have a conversation, so in order to think purely in English
You have to limit yourself to the words that you already know
In some ways, it means that you have to stop thinking in complicated terms, or expressing complex concepts
You feel extremely limited in the beginning
But it is that feeling of limitation that becomes your source of motivation
So to begin with, try to hold back on the things you want to say
Just use the words you already know in that language to think and speak
And expand your language knowledge from there
To jump straight in
Suddenly speaking in English in the same way as you speak Japanese after learning that over dozens of years
No one can do that
In a way, you have to go back to being a child again
For kids, as children, there are lots of things they often try to express and don't know how
I think that inability to express onesself causes kids a lot of stress and frustration
When I started using Japanese, I thought to myself "it really is tough for kids"
In English or Japanese, they might want to say something and not know the right word
I really think that is what you have to go through to develop a good ability to express yourself daily conversation
It really takes a lot of effort at first
You have to go back to being a child
At first, you can only use simple words
But the more you get yourself thinking only in that language, the easier and faster it becomes to learn and pick up more of that language
And point three:
Point three is "Don't be Shy!"
I know that the Japanese education system emphasises that students should avoid making mistakes
And as a result, Japanese are deathly afraid of ever making mistakes
But I believe that making mistakes is an integral part to remembering things like vocabulary
Embarassing experiences stock strongest in our memories
Experiences that we regret
For me, out of all the Japanese I learned
Words I learned while embarrassed or having made a mistake
Those phrases are the ones that have stayed with me the strongest
As some examples
When I first came to Japan, staying in a homestay in Fukuoka when I was 15
Every morning, my host mother would see me off
Ever morning she would say "See you when you get back!"
I didn't know what "See you when you get back" meant
But it looked like she was saying "see you later" or "have a good day"
So I figured that is what you say as you leave in the morning
And every morning when I left for school, I would turn back to my host mother
And shout "See you when you get back!" before heading off to school...
I didn't learn the correct Japanese for this situation until a year later
I was mortified
"Why didn't anyone tell me this?!" was my reaction
But it was my embarrassment which meant that I never forgot that Japanese
So my advice is don't be shy or hold back
Get in and have lots of embarrassing experiences
Get frustrated, have fun
Having as many emotional experiences as possible while learning a language will help you learn faster
In my own case, as a student
I actually dropped out of Japanese in my second year of University
My teacher actually asked me to stop
I went and found a daily part time job where I could use Japanese
I made friends, and went out of my way to help out Japanese in NZ
Through my job and such
I made lots of different opportunities to speak
Using those opportunities to have enjoyable experiences, I think that is what works best
So I encourage you all to make your own opportunities
Watch English DVDs and TV
Listen to English radio, sing English songs at karaoke
If there is a foreigner at your work, even if your English isn't so great, bother him or her a bit
Strike up a conversation, just a simple one is fine
Don't try to say anything too difficult
Make friends, look to associate with foreigners around where you are
Help them out, that kind of thing, I think that really is the best way
And with your comments as well, just remember that one way in which English is totally different to Japanese
Is that people from many cultures use it
So basically, English speakers are used to eharing all kinds of mangled versions of English
In contrast to Japanese, who aren't used to hearing people struggling with their language
Japanese will often say "Huh?" and not understand if someone's Japanese is even slightly off
But in English, people will usually figure out what you mean, so don't be shy
Leave comments in English
Just jump in and using a language is the best way to remember it
So get in and try leaving a comment in English
And not just with me but practice with other people
I would love for people to increase the number of places that you can go and have exchagnes
That's it from me, in future I want to do more newsy vlogs and talk about other things
But I got some questions and comments about this
So I thought I would just try answering in a video
What do you think?
Tell me what you think!
Peace!
Peace!
