Hi everyone and welcome back to my channel!
yes, today I'm only speaking Italian in this video
I thought it could be cool to do a video in Italian atleast once
Because everyday I get questions from my subscribers about my Italian
How did I learn it... I have to say that I learned Italian by living here
I started studying Italian in highschool and I studied it for 4 years
Actually I didn't have a real interest in Italian
When I was in middle school I studied Spanish
When you go to highschool (mine) you could decide whether you wanted to continue your foreign language or learn another
and for Italian, there was an exchange program
In other words, if I had chosen Italian I would have had the opportunity to go to Italy
in Europe!!
so I was like, yea! I'll do Italian
I don't know anything about the culture, I don't know anything about the language but I'll do it!
I'll do it because I studied Spanish and so it would be really easy to move between the two
Italian and Spanish are close but...
but actually for a native English speaker it's pretty difficult because
in the beginning I wasn't really able to differentiate between the two...
everytime I saw "door" I would put door in Spanish instead of Italian
and I couldn't understand why it was wrong...
for me it was really difficult to go from Spanish to Italian
but whatever, I signed up for the course so that I could go to Italy
In the begining I didn't put a lot of time into studying Italian
because like I said I wasn't really interested in it
I just wanted to do the exchange...
I only did enough to pass the exams, Iearned the vocab and put in the minimum level of effort necessary to pass
I actually passed the class with a good grade too..
So now we're at the third year of high school, the year of the exchange
When I did the exchange, I could NOT speak Italian
After 3 years of studying Italian my Italian was SOOOO BAD, IT SUCKED ***
But at the same time when I arrived in Italy, I fell in love
I really loved this country and I knew that I wanted to live here
After the exchange I finally decided that I was going to start studying Italian more seriously
BUT the third year of high school we didn't study the grammar anymore because
in theory we had done everything
By the third year we had finished subjunctive, the only thing we didn't cover was subjunctive with conditional
but we 'did' all the grammar
the fourth year of high school we read a simplified version of Dante's inferno
yea so the entire fourth year we did Dante and studied Italian politics and (modern) history
this is why I know a bunch of stuff about Italy, I know about the history and the politics...
...but I didn't know how to speak Italian
so we know the story, I tried to get into Bocconi
I was accepted
and after that I moved to Italy!
When I arrived in Italy for the first time, like I said before, I couldn't speak Italian
and so I started an Italian course at uni where I relearned all the things that I had done in high school
from present tense and the articles all the way to subjunctive with conditional
and yea I did a B2 level exam...
and now here I am
I've arrived at a point where I'm able to speak Italian 'comfortably'
yea, I guess I'm comfortable speaking Italian
I know that I make a lot of errors when I speak but
for me it's easier to read and write
So I studied Italian for 5 years and I wasn't able to speak
I was only able to speak when I started communicating more with Italian native speakers
It's different to learn a language in a class and be able to speak it in a normal context, with native speakers
it's completely different
I speak Italian well enough
I don't say that I'm fluent in Italian
but I think that I'm proficient in Italian
you shouldn't ever stop trying
learning a new language is something that takes time
A month ago I couldn't speak this well
and probably a month from now I'll speak better (I hope xD)
It's something that takes time and you have to give it time
This isn't supposed to be a long video, I just wanted
to speak Italian for once on my channel
and for everyone who wanted to hear me speak this language...
there it is
