Serious games
Are a very very important tool and way forward for us to kind of think about how to solve problems and
Find solutions and bring people together in new and different ways.
I mean if you look at the way society is going today
You know we’ll leave room for the unexpected to occur within that game space.
We were really excited to find out that the state department was interested in the role of games in international development and affairs.
It’s been around for a very long time, you can go all the way back to Oregon Trail video game in the 80’s but,
Now it has much larger implications and a lot more opportunity
For training, not only in public diplomacy but across the board
It’s exciting to see what’s happening from a public policy standpoint as well as other companies and how they’re sort of interacting with games.
How serious games can affect learning in developing countries
For underserved youth around the world or malaria prevention and typing and computer programming
To provide more realistic simulation of what happens in conflict states like
Civic participation and workforce development
Exchange programs to sort of enhance what we’re doing with people to people diplomacy
Contribute to world causes so if you’re planting trees in your game you’re planting trees for real
To experience narratives that otherwise they would not be able to understand and engaged with
How it is impacting social media
Games can change how I think, how I feel, and how I behave.
If you want to teach people about how airplanes fly a good example is a paper airplane.
So, what if we brought that into a mobile device where people could change the size and the shape and say change the force of gravity and
Just play around with it so that they can really understand what are all the impacts of that.
The focus of our culture today is shifting to a gaming type of world.
It’s a serious gaming, it’s just the serious component of our society
As we move into an increasing globalized world where we are connected in so many more and more complex ways.
The term serious games will eventually disappear just because so much of education and training and
What we’re now calling serious games will just become that’s the way we do things.
Thought leaders in the State Department and other game makers are interested in engaging international audiences.
I mean if you look at the way society is going today and where the millennium generation is going they’re kind of merging the two.
They wanted to get serious about the world they want to get engaged in the world and they want to do it socially so this all kind of molds into the same kind of product.
The future of serious games is definitely much bigger than it is now; we have to really find those areas where the expansion is possible.
