Hi I'm Jules and I'm Sarah and this is the University of Exeter.
At the University of Exeter, the clubs and societies on offer provide an important and enjoyable part of student life.
With over 100 societies to choose from including archery, archaeology, welsh society and debating society,
there's literally something for everyone. But that's not all, you can also use your
skills to help out the local community raising money for charity, or even work in the student media.
Not only can you further your interests but you can also further your career with new experiences and skills.
So let's go and talk to some of the people involved and see what's on offer.
The University of Exeter's one of the most advanced student media networks
in the country comprising of Exe TV, the student television station, Expression FM, the student radio,
Exposé, the student newspaper and Exe Media Online, our web service.
What makes Exe Media so special?
Expression FM is one of the top leading student stations, we've got an all year round FM license which is very rare.
Exposé's read by over 6000 students and it's produced fortnightly;
Exe Media Online is one of the top media websites in the country.
Exe TV has won lots of national student television awards. We offer full training, no experience is required
and yea, we just teach you all of the skills that you need to go into a career in media.
Hi I'm here with RAG at the moment which stands for raising and giving.
Well RAG basically is a fundraising organisation; we raise money
for five different charities each year. So what type of activities do you do to raise this money?
We do all kinds of different activities, we do a hitch to Dublin and to Amsterdam so
you raise money through sponsorship, we have events, a massive fashion show and one of
our flagship events is something called the Safer Sex Ball; it's a massive ball at the
end of the first term and it's for World Aids Day. We raise money about 20-25 thousand pounds.
So how can students get involved in things like this? Well as soon as someone's a member of
Exeter University, then you are a member of RAG.
The University of Exeter no longer offers music as a degree but under Extunes offers a range
of societies and clubs. So what's Extunes all about? We have clubs and societies for everybody,
from beats and bass to bell ringing and everything in between. No, there's no
previous experience required, whether you're a complete beginner or at diploma level, there's
something for everybody, we just want you to get involved.
I'm here with the Athletic Union. So what can you tell us that's great about sport at Exeter?
Well sport in Exeter is very good, we currently have 5000 students who are members
of the AU, there are 42 sports clubs at the university, we're currently placed tenth
in the country in the booster league tables for sport. Our sports range from the
more traditional sports like rugby, cricket, hockey, tennis to the more wackier ones such as
spellology, kite surfing, windsurfing. So do you have to be a professional to join these clubs?
Not at all, not at all. Although we do have a very high level of sportsmen here
at Exeter which is supported by the University, we also offer... most clubs offer beginner
tuition and cater for all levels, from the complete beginners to the guys who are most
likely going to get to 2012.
I'm here in Community Action. Hi John, could you tell us a little bit more about it?
Yea, Community Action is the student volunteering organisation at Exeter University.
We're actually the largest student volunteering organisation in the whole of the country,
we've got over 500 students volunteering on a weekly basis and we've got
100 projects in and around Exeter. So what kind of projects can you get involved with?
You can really get involved with anything, we've got volunteering with children in local schools,
with older people at tea parties, and we've got links to the RSPCA, the RNLI, but
the beauty of it is you can give up anywhere between an hour and 20 hours of your week.
So now you've seen some of the clubs and societies on offer.
There's plenty for you to get involved in at the University of Exeter.
