- Alonso has been criticised in the past
for some less than perfect starts, but today he was spectacular!
- I think it was incredible, as it was in Barcelona.
It was definitely a very stressful moment in the race for various reasons.
Unfortunately, on its own it was not enough to get to the top step of the podium.
Undoubtedly today, especially Red Bull showed that it was stronger.
Therefore, it was in any case a very positive result, especially for Fernando,
who is now second in the Championship.
I think that says a lot. It also means we have to work
in a more incisive way to ensure that, next year,
we have a car that is completely competitive immediately.
- Getting a podium finish in Monza, even on the lowest step,
is always a very emotional moment and it came as Fernando
managed to fend off Hamilton in the closing stages.
- Yes. It seems Fernando found that little bit of extra motivation,
as he was here in front of his public, our public.
I was with him a moment ago and clearly,
last year was even more emotional,
but seeing all those people rushing to be there
for us is something extraordinary.
- Clearly, the championship is now over.
But there are still races that need to be respected and need to be won.
At the next round, the night race in Singapore,
we will run with the tyres that Ferrari likes best, the Soft and the Supersoft.
- Absolutely, we have to respect the championship which is not actually over.
Fernando must defend his second place in the Drivers’ championship
and we must fight to get closer to second place in the Constructors’.
Our objective, as we have stated is
to try and win some races, while also working towards next year.
- So development (on this year’s car) has stopped and work is ongoing for next year?
- Yes, we have already stopped development a while ago,
however, there will still be some updates coming
as they were planned earlier and on the track,
we will try and optimise our times while maybe at the same time
evaluating set-ups that could be useful for next year
as well as mechanical components for next year.
That will be the sort of approach we will adopt and,
I repeat, that we must work right to the end,
to respect the work and the enthusiasm there is following us
as we travel the world to tackle the remaining races.
