Choreographer Roland Petit remembered. The acclaimed French dancer and choreographer
passed away on Sunday, July 10, at the age of 87 in Geneva, Switzerland. Trained at the
Paris Opera Ballet school, Mr. Petit was later appointed head of the academy before going
on to found his own Ballet National de Marseilles. He was known for his vibrantly creative ballets
that dazzled stages from Paris to Hollywood, with some well-known productions that included
"Notre Dame de Paris," "Daddy Long Legs" with Hollywood actor Fred Astaire and "Anything
Goes" with Bing Crosby. Mr. Petit went on to choreograph many more inspired works such
as "Paradise Lost," based on the poem by John Milton, which cast the renowned ballet stars
Dame Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev as Adam and Eve. The great US choreographer Alvin
Ailey paid tribute to Mr. Petit when he said that everyone in the world of dance owed their
career to him and stated, "Roland Petit put poetry into movement."
Our sincere sympathies to the family, friends and colleagues of the beloved Mr. Roland Petit,
whose gifted works will continue to inspire many toward achieving their creative dreams.
May his soul rest peacefully in Heaven's love and light
