I was told by one of the other parents that the score to get into university took into
account your four best subjects but it also had to include English and Maths or a Science
subject and I have a daughter who is very strong in the Arts Literature sort of angle
and Maths and Science is not her shining moment so I wondered if that was still the case or
whether or not those rules are likely to change or are they still the case?
In short the answer is definitely not. When WACE came in well basically you do exams in
Year 12. Most students would probably do somewhere between four and six and it is the four best
subjects that count towards your ATAR. You do also need to satisfy the English requirement
whether that is one of your four best subjects or not doesn't come into it. So if a student
has done Basket weaving, Drama, Dance and Indonesian and they are their four best subjects
the student's ATAR will be worked out on those four but the English is also very important
and the student does need to do an exam in English in Year 12 and for entry into university
it does have to be at the completion of at least Stage 2A or 2B. I mean it can be higher
but we won't take any lower than that.
So Maths and Science if those are your best subjects and that's all you want to do then
great. If you need to do Maths or Science to satisfy prerequisites then you need to
do them as well but no that is not necessary.
