National Coming Out Day - 11th October 2013
What does coming out mean to you?
Coming out means to me, disclosing my *** orientation to
friends, family, random people.
coming out, I think means... I don't like the word coming out
but its about
trying to accept yourself
and trying to make people realise
that you're maybe not what sexuality they expect you to be
sense of realisation
coming out me means when you have to
adjust people's opinion
when they assume you're straight or cis and you have to tell them otherwise
coming out means to me
is making me feel really confident in who I am
I think it's really important to be out
it means to be free to do what I want
and live my life
to be truthful, to me, yourself and everyone around you and to not be ashamed who you are
Being free
It means bravery
To me it means telling people something different about yourself that they may of not know otherwise
When was the last time you came out?
It's quite funny actually because it was last week
they were my co workers and
that were continuously hitting on me and it was quite annoying
and I change my hair colour alot
so my co-worker asked me "The next time you should dye it rainbow colours"
and I said, no I wont I might be gay but I am not that gay
and without thinking about it I came out
This summer actually
I can't remember when I last came out physically
I guess maybe at work or maybe to my housemates
I have to come out so often
because everyone assumes that I am cis
quite a lot of the time now
and I do get into situations where I have to tell people I am not
it happens quite freqently
some people in my family was the last people I told about
my *** identity, I think they are awaiting a I wasn't quite sure they did
and I saw them the first time that they'd seen me
and I was talking to them about it
about just over a year ago coming out as trans
That would be six months ago
Six months ago
Week and a half ago
Accidentally at work a few years ago
Which celebrity do you most admire for coming out?
Ben Whishaw, for just coming out
I don't admire any of them
Jessie J
I can't really think of anyone
I don't think there are many trans role models out there
The celebrity I most admire for coming out is pink
I guess Lady Gaga because of the born this way foundation that she set up
and the good shes done for the community overall
It would be Sir Ian McKellen
Russell Tovey
any celebrity that is in a field that
like football and sports where it is particularly hard to come out
because you will be judged by our fans, sponsors
and things like that
Who did you least expect to be accepting of your *** orientation?
My Nan because she's super Catholic and I thought there was no way
she was always saying how gay people were wrong but she was very accepting.
Friends from school
My parents
My dad
Acquaintances from back in Essex, that I expected not to be
very supportive but I was actually surprised, so I am thrilled with that
That would be my dad because he seems very much like a old fashioned person
but he accepted and was perfectly happy
My mom for my gender and friends for my *** orientation
Family
My grandparents were absolutely fine
What age did you come out?
14
19-20
19
The first time I came out was when I was 12 when I came out as bisexual
and then roughly around 17-18 I came out as transgender
I came out when I was 17
First of all when I was 14 then again at 18
16
16 and then 17
17
I think 13-14
Has anything positive happened to you since coming out?
I get to do loads at Allsorts which is awesome
Yeah, I can be myself
I really feel I don't have to hide in some sort of way
I don't have to be quiet every time someone asks me if I
have a boyfriend or not
it really makes me feel happy with myself
I can actually be myself without thinking thinking that
they judge me because of this, because I don't care as they have nothing to do with it
I can be myself
Yeah, I feel more relaxed and confident in myself and I can now get on with my life better now
I don't have the paranoia of having people asking the questions as they already know the answers
Lots of positive things have happened, some of them happened living in brighton now
being part of a big gay community
My life have changed so much since coming out
something have been very difficult and something thing have been
very bad, but on whole it's made my mental health
and so many more important things much better
I think the most positive thing I've gotten out of coming out
has been the ability to live, I've never felt so connect to myself
or friends or anything as I do now
so, thats the best thing
made a huge source of friend
from all walk of life, and just generally my mother
Yeah, I have been able to be more truthful with friends
yeah, I got closer to my friends and felt more happy
Joined Allsorts and had some really good volunteering opportunities and that has been really positive experience
