Our seniors are the most underutilized asset we have in this state. We have an incredible
group of people who are experienced, who have lived incredible lives and who have the Vermont
spirit of wanting to give back over a period of time. And what's unfortunate is that they
are no longer asked to participate in the way that they used to. And in many cases the
seniors that I've talked to love to give back and volunteer and be involved and be engaged
in some way. But they're not invited to do so. I think we have a real opportunity to
be able to reach out to this incredible group of people and engage them in solving many
of the challenges that we are facing today. Whether it's making sure that young girls
have a mentor if their mother is facing difficult times. Whether or not it's helping to build
out Habitat for Humanity houses with individuals who may have been contractors and are now
retired but would like to get involved a day a week or a couple days a week. We have incredible
opportunity to tap into their expertise as we're trying to tackle new problems that are
facing us. Because that amount of experience is invaluable in making sure that we don't
repeat the same mistakes over and over again and perhaps look to our extraordinary past
in order to solve some of our problems of today and move into the future.
