Hello, my name is Sibcoe, welcome to another episode of A Gamer Guy's Review. I'm no professional
critic, but a gamer just like you, with decades of experience in just about every kind of
game, and I'll be giving you my thoughts about Look and feel, mechanics, if it's fun, and
how you can win.
This will be part 2 on game mechanics. So let's get started with the game in the background,
Special Forces: Team X, from Zombie Studios and Atari.
This is a Team FPS game based on the cover mechanic, with 5 game types, significant character
progression, and a unique map design and voting system. if you hated solo players in team
games before, you're really going to hate them now.
Right out of the gate, let's talk about this real time map voting system. Before each game
everyone can vote on pieces of the map, which when combined with the other pieces, creates
a highly customizable experience, featuring 9 unique tiles creating over 100 possible
combinations. It is a pretty innovative addition to the arena FPS game type.
There are 5 game types, team death match, capture the flag, hot zone, High value target,
and capture point. High value target and hot zone are unique to this game and are pretty
fun.
The core mechanic driving the game is the team bonus sytem which heavily rewards players
when 2 or more of you are together. The bonus flag on the UI let's you know how big your
bonus multiplier is, and I can tell you from experience it is significant.
The level up system is pretty compelling and drives you to play more. Each level sees unlocks
ranging from new weapons, to attack dogs, armor, cosmetic items, and buffs to your character
like resilience. In game it is pretty easy to tell when someone is stacking defensive
buffs or attack buffs, and it makes for challening and constantly changing play.
Another core of the game is the cover system, whereby you can throw yourself at an immovable
object in the hopes of not being shot. I have to say, while it is clunky and annoying in
it's implementation, you do get accustomed to it, and without using it you are going
to get tore up pretty fast. The cover system is sometimes irritating, in that everyone
is doing it, and ofentimes the game devolves into a frag fest back and forth and blindly
shooting from behind cover.
There are also bloody executions and headshots, which add a real sense of vendetta to the
game, you really want to score some points against the *** who just broke your
neck with his shotgun.
Fighting against multiple teams is also a new and interesting feature, offering up some
pretty awesome scoring opportunities.
having the dedicated sever option makes this game replet with a massive number of play
options, and plenty of games to choose from. Even empty servers seemed to fill pretty fast.
Besides a slight clunky feel to the cover system, that is sadly, a common problem in
all cover system games, the action is smooth and the mechanics spot on. Once you run a
few games and warm up, your racking up kil streaks and dominating the map, at least until
a big fuking dog bites you in the balls.
Overall, I'm going to give this game a solid B+ o mechanics, detracting for the clunky
cover system, and adding plenty for the relatively flawless and highly addicting character progression
and map system.
