Hi I am Terri Brunner . I’m the State Director for Rural Development here in New Mexico at the United States Department of Agriculture.
Our agency helps rural community and economic development all around the nation
and we're here in Deming, New Mexico today to talk a little bit about, and visit one of our energy efficiency projects at Compass Components
which is a large manufacturer of wire harnesses for vehicles here in Deming, New Mexico. They employ about 125 people
and we’re going to go look at their energy efficiency lighting project.
We’re here at Compass Components today where are looking at their new energy efficient lighting system
that was financed partially by a USDA Rural Energy for America grant of about $48,000
They replaced all of their florescent light bulbs in the building and their going to save about 50% of their energy costs as a result of that
Compass Components is a really important industry here in Deming, New Mexico. They make wire harnesses and those are the wires that
provide the electricity and such to things like school busses and it’s kind of the basic element in the wiring of
a school bus. They’ve been in business for a few years up here and they employ about 115 people
So it’s a very big employer here in Deming, New Mexico and the US Deparatment of Agriculture is really pleased to have been able to help
with their important project. The hope is that, by saving on their lighting they can help save
on their bottom line which helps in tough economic times and allows them to make investments elsewhere. They also, a few years ago here at Compass
Components, installed a solar energy system on the roof which has helped them save on their energy costs as well. So, this gives you a little look at
what we are doing at the US Department of Agriculture in our Rural Energy for America Program.
