I actually sort of lived in one, when I wasn't
trying to break my little tomboy neck.
I was actually in the Carnegie Public Library in my small town.
I can still see
the shelves.
I worked my way down Nancy Drew and then The Hardy Boys
and that kind of led me toward things like
"To Kill a Mockingbird" and
"Huckleberry Finn," and so I have to
thank The Hardy Boys for that.
I loved the little Carnegie Public Library. I can still see it now. I think the building is
still there. It was just a
home away from home.
I can't imagine what my life would be like if I didn't have
that little public library
and that school library, too, for that matter.
I tend to do
a lot of research just by looking at other books.
Libraries, public libraries, allow me to do that.
They allow me to poke around
and see,
and get ideas, visually as well.
I just love art books,
things that are not the things that I do, things that inspire me
to think in a different way. What I'm doing with this...for instance, the...
..my book, "Faith Bass Darling's Last Garage Sale,"
I had to do a lot of research
on
antiques.
Antiques play a very big,
pivotal role in the storytelling.
Twelve antiques
I had to know all about those antiques, and how would I have found
out things about those antiques without having a library
full of books that were just about nothing but antiques?
So again, I wasn't really reading about antiques as much as I was
researching pictures and information.
And that's essentially how I use my library as well as just, you know,
a wonderful meeting place. It's a nice community
area for ...in the area I live in.
[On censorship] I'm a writer, so I'm
not really liking censorship very much.
I can certainly
understand
the worries that some people have, but
I believe that censorship is bad
and shackles the way that we assess and learn how
to be critical readers and thinkers.
concedes
To impose my ideas of what you should read,
it doesn't sound like democracy to me.
Well, my latest project is that
novel that's coming out. I'm signing galleys right now. I shall pick one up at this point,
Look how gorgeous it is.
The galleys look
like a paperback actually, are beautiful.
It's coming out on April 26th, exactly on that day.
And we'll have them all in libraries across the country.
