I spend hours and days looking at faces in photographs. People looking at each other
and, often, people looking at me--behind the camera. When they look into the lens, their
expression in the image is a reflection of how I am treating them in that moment.
When you do this, day in and day out, it adds up. It makes me conscious of our kindness--of
our humanity--in every interaction. I see smiles in millimeters, every sweep of an eyelash;
all of these tiny fractions of emotions whose sum is a grander story of that person than
I think even they know.
It is for this, that when you choose a person to take your pictures, to create your portrait,
you are inviting them in--into yourself--and thus charging them with a noble, weighty task.
It is to say, "my daughter only turns 1 once; my wedding day is just a single day; this
is a moment, a pause along my road; and I am human, and visible and vulnerable and yet
I don't want to forget this moment."
My name is Mark. I am a photographer. I create images. I also restore them. I save memories.
I harness light. And I am here to see you and hear you.
I operate under a symbol--the compass. It is, to me, a symbol of quiet dignity, of clarity,
of mindfulness and direction. Every picture throughout your life is an image of you at
one point finding your way along your journey. It's of those who travel with you; of those
who are no longer with you.
Every photo session begins with a conversation. Sometimes people tell me what's important
to them, and sometimes we both find out together along that journey.
