Hello guys, I'm Luciano, and you might remember me from last year's Project for Awesome, when
I built a pillow fort supporting a charity called TECHO.
And it ended up being one of the ten winners. So Nerdfighters from Argentina and TECHO teamed
up, and 8 of us went to build a small house for
a family. The team: Santiago, Juli, Noe, Camo, Loli,
Vicky, Agus and me. The goal: 1 house in 2 days.
The family was composed of Basilia, the mother; Juan Carlos, the father; and three boys, Alexis,
Franco and Leo. They also had two dogs and a cat which played with us during the construction.
Their small house was made of concrete and included a kitchen, one room, in which all
five of them slept, and one bathroom, which didn't even have a shower.
An addition to the existing place was needed. The process of building the house was extremely
tiring, especially because of the long hours under the sun. It was awfully hot. Lots of
sunscreen and water were needed. During the first day we measured and set the
base of the house, which was composed of 15 logs, and on top of that, we settled the wooden
floor. We left our first day of building feeling
quite accomplished as we never thought 8 nerds would be able to do this.
The second day turned out to be (quite) more complicated.
We had to put the walls up, the roof, door and windows.
The walls weren't a problem, and the pieces of wood started looking more like a house
now. But after a delicious meal prepared by the family, problems started happening when
getting back to work. The roof was more difficult to get in place than we expected and screwdrivers
weren't working (and no, this weren't sonic ones). We were exhausted.
The sun started going down, and although we didn't have time to paint the house, it was
done in time. We finished our goal, and we could leave the family with a new place that
would become the children's room. The kids where already planning where each bed was
going to go. It was a really interesting weekend, tiring,
but lots of fun with really awesome people. We helped a family in need and strengthened
our friendship on the way. If you live in Latin America, I really suggest
you to gather up some (Nerdfighters) and gp spend a weekend building a house with TECHO.
By the way, you should go check another video made by Argentinian Nerdfighters about food
banks. Have a great Project for Awesome, and as they
say in my country, Don't Forget to be Argentawesome.
