Andrew Davies, Academic Director: The Birmingham Project’s a really exciting opportunity
for first year students at the end of their first year to work in groups together on interdisciplinary
research projects, pooling all the knowledge and expertise they’ve gained in first year
of studies here. The calibre of students, the presentations,
the use of multimedia was just phenomenal. I was extremely impressed with the logical
and intelligent approach that they took to answering the question and how they used their
creativity to put forward outputs, that really brought their ideas to life.
Three words to describe The Project would be innovation.
Teamwork. And challenge.
The challenge that we’re doing this year is based on happiness. So, what is happiness
and how do we get it. : I think it’s a really safe environment
for them to learn about themselves, find out what their strengths are and to really practice
the kind of skills employers like myself are looking for. I think from what I’ve seen
today, it’s been a really high energy environment and the students seem to have really enjoyed
so I think they’ll get a lot from it. It’s really good to work with a mixed group
of students because people come from different course backgrounds so they come with different
ideas that you might not have thought of. It’s been an excellent opportunity for the
students to tackle real world challenges in the same kind of conditions that they would
have to deal with them in with real world employers as well. So they’ve been able
to demonstrate their skills in front of people from professional contexts and professional
services who deal with this kind of stuff every day.
It encourages students to think big, it encourages them to think about the world and the impact
they can have both individually, as teams and with future employers like IBM, to really
change the world.
