- Hello!
Happy Friday!
So,
tell me.
What's in your waiting room?
What kind of a waiting room do you have in your studio?
Do you have your parents and students
wait in your living room?
Do you have a little side room that's outside
of where your studio is set up?
Let me know what kind of a set up you have today
in the comments.
I would love to talk to you
about what you have in your waiting
room.
Now, if your joining me live
as always,
please make sure to say hello.
If you are watching on the replay,
please jump in to the comments
because I'm going to be watching these comments for a while
and I will make sure to get back to you.
Today
is all about
what's in
your
lobby?
What's in your waiting room?
Are you using your waiting room effectively?
I have a few ideas for you to use in your waiting room
that I think will inspire your students,
get your parents thinking about practice
and also keep those siblings busy.
So I
I brought down some of the things
from my waiting room today.
And I wanted to show you what I have.
The first thing that I have in my waiting room
is a bunch of music themed books.
Now, sometimes I rotate what I have up in there.
But,
normally one of the things that I have all the time
is this wonderful series here.
And we have different composers.
So this is called the
Getting to Know the World's Greatest Composers series.
And I have a ton of these books.
So let me show you some of the ones that I have.
I think they're so cute.
I've got Bach.
I have Mozart.
I've got Beethoven.
Chopin and Tchaikovsky.
That's my classical
collection of these.
And then I also have another collection.
I'm really into
American
musics here.
And I have a couple of things here.
I have Leonard Bernstein,
I've got George Gershwin,
Aaron Copland,
Duke Ellington
and I also well, this is not American,
but across the pond we have this band,
The Beatles.
So these books are just so much fun.
Let me show you the inside of one of them.
So I want to take out the Duke Ellington book.
Inside this book, it's just so amazing.
Not only do they have
a basically a biography.
It's in large text so it's easy for students to read.
And in fact, I tell my parents about these books.
And if you have siblings waiting upstairs,
oftentimes I will tell them,
"why don't you read this book
"and then tell me about it in your lesson?"
So it's kind of like a pre-lesson assignment.
And the illustrations
and the artwork in these are just absolutely fantastic.
You can find these on Amazon.
Another thing that I like to keep
up in my waiting room
is stuff for the little ones to stay busy.
If you have siblings who come to attend
and wait during lesson time,
sometimes you need to make sure
that they have something to keep
them occupied.
Oftentimes, parents will bring things for them.
But, parents are busy sometimes.
Maybe they didn't grab that bag
that has all the games and puzzles
and stuff like that.
So, I make sure to have some things
for my littles that are waiting during the sibling lessons.
I have this cute little book called Doodle All Year.
And inside, there are
doodle assignments.
So this one says, "fill these huge bowls of ice cream
"with your favorite flavors."
And so, I keep this upstairs.
And of course I will have a box of crayons
and some colored pencils up there as well.
I'm making sure that
we don't have little students up there by themselves
because we definitely don't want them
having access to that kind of stuff
with nobody watching them.
I've heard horror stories from teachers before
who have told me that
walls ended up getting colored and stuff like that.
Eee!
Has that ever happened to you guys?
Have you ever had your waiting room
a total mess?
When people leave?
I've been there.
Finally, I like to also have
some books up there for piano parents advice.
So I have three books up there right now.
One of them, this is just a beautiful book
that was a gift to me.
It's called the Music Lovers Quotations.
That's just really beautiful quotes about music
from all throughout history.
I have this book.
This is one of my favorites.
If you never checked this book out,
please do.
This is fabulous.
I think that any music teacher should read this.
It's really really enjoyable.
It's called Musicophilia.
It's by Oliver Sacks.
And what I like about this is that
the chapters are complete in and of themselves.
So parents can read a chapter while they're waiting.
Really interesting stories.
I've had a lot of good conversations with parents
about this book.
And then,
last but not least, I also
one of the new things I have up in my lobby this year
is this book called Not Until You've Done Your Practice!
So this gives parents some ideas about
what they can do to help their kids.
It's called the classical survival guide
for kids who are learning a musical instrument
but hate practicing.
Does anybody out there have a student who hates practicing?
Give me a
yes I do!
In the comments if you
totally understand where I'm coming from on that one.
This is a must in my waiting room.
So, those are my ideas for you.
Recap real quick.
Have some music books up there that your students
can read before their lesson time.
If they have siblings that are waiting
or maybe if they're dropped off a little bit early,
give them something that they can read
that's maybe music themed.
Have some things for your little ones up there
to keep them occupied.
Your parents will really thank you if you have some colored
pencils and crayons and some coloring pages
and things like that up there.
I even have my little color
a sticker book for Finding Dory.
And then also, have something for your parents.
Because sometimes they need a little time to relax as well.
I have quite a few parents who have told me,
"I love your waiting room.
"It's just, it's my place to just
"relax and have a nice
"quiet half hour."
Alright everybody.
So, I want you to do something for me today.
I've been doing these Friday Five Lives
for about seven weeks now.
And I have some really great ideas for the future.
But, I want you
to chime in.
