Last time the UN rolled out
a very British royal welcome it was 1957
Queen Elizabeth the second was 31 years old,
and had been on the throne for just 4 years
when she first addressed the General Assembly.
"Which, in my belief, has contributed significantly"
When she first walked through those doors,
The United Nations had only been established for 12 years.
Flash forward more than half a century,
and this morning the Queen was back.
She met with Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon,
and spoke to the Assembly once again.
"When I was first here, there were just
three United Nations operations overseas.
Now over 120,000 men and women are
deployed in 26 missions across the world.
You have helped to reduce conflict,
you have offered humanitarian assistance to millions of people
affected by natural disasters and other emergencies,
and you have been deeply committed to tackling
the effects of poverty in many parts of the world."
