Hi there, Joseph Kern, Instructional Designer at Emporia State University.
This video is going to show you about how to allow pop-ups on your iPad or on a Mac
running Safari. The reason for this is, there is the SmarThinking tutoring software that
I’ve been trying to get people to use, and people were not able to get it to work on
their iPads, or some people said they weren’t able to get it on Macs.
But the problem is just, it was set so that the pop-ups weren’t being allowed.
You can see my fancy iPad here…
How to allow pop-ups, like if I go there and try to run it, in my Blackboard page, in tools,
I click on the SmarThinking, and I get this.
So there’s a pop-up trying to run the program, but it’s not working.
What I have to do is go into Settings, and in Settings, I find Safari.
And I look down here, and right now, Pop-up blocking is on, so I want to turn it off.
Now later, I might want to go back and turn it back on just so this is protected, but
for now while I’m trying to run the tutoring software I want to keep it off.
Go back in there to Tools and select the SmarThinking, and I want to allow this.
And again.
And again.
And now this is the tutoring service, so I can go in, schedule some tutoring, and get
some help in intermediate accounting.
Now to do this with a Mac, really, it’s just a matter of going into the settings of
the web browser and letting it allow pop-ups.
So really it’s not a Mac issue, it’s just your pop-up blocker.
So if you’re running Safari, it’s going to look a little different for you. I have
a PC that I’m running Safari with, but Firefox or Internet Explorer… Chrome… Whatever
you use, there’s going to be some Preferences or Settings or something like that that you
can look into, and with Safari it’s pretty easy.
It’s just right there… Pop-up Blocking. So you click that. Now it’s shut off.
In some of them it’s going to be listed as Tools or Options.
We can look at Preferences here, which is another way of accessing it.
And again, some different browers, it might be the Options. In here, it’s Security.
Clicking this would block the pop-ups. We want to make sure it’s allowed.
So now, with that, I go into Tools… SmarThinking… And the pop-up comes up, and I am able to
run the program.
So I tried this out on Macs, not just my PC with the Safari browser, and it worked out
well with Firefox and with Safari.
So a few options there if you were running a Mac and trying to work on the tutoring service.
It’s do-able. You just have to get rid of the pop-ups.
Now you know how, so have a good time internet browsing.
