I'm Pat Sparks, Safety Compliance officer Marine in the Goolwa region.
So you don't stop in a dangerous place I'm going to show you how to identify
a channel and a safe place to anchor.
Some channels can be easily identified by markers. Red and green markers indicate the limits of a narrow channel;
however channels aren't always marked so common-sense is needed.
If you're in a waterway that isn't marked
firstly go slow if you're unsure of the depth;
don't anchor where you could abstruct other vessels;
and don't anchor in
dangerous positions
such as bends or in areas of fast flow.
For example, not all areas of the Murray Mouth are marked.
However it is a channel because water flows through it out to sea.
It's dangerous and illegal to anchor in the Mouth
due to the unpredictability of the flow,
depth and width of the channel.
Any boat at anchor is an impediment
to other vessels;
and if an anchor lets go you could end up in the surf before you know it.
As a side tip, if you want to fish in the Mouth
we suggest coming ashore on either side
and walking to the Mouth to fish.
Safe boating.
And if you see me out in my orange boat come and say G'day.
I've always got time to answer questions about boating safety.
