The United States, one of Korea's largest trading partners, logged its biggest trade
deficit with the country, according to a recent report issued by the U.S. Department of Commerce.
Kim Ji-yeon reports. The United States recorded an all-time-high this year in terms of its
trade deficit with Korea.
The new report by the U.S. Department of Commerce said the figure stood at 2-point-4-billion
U.S. dollars in April . the largest monthly trade deficit ever posted between the two
countries.
The U.S. trade deficit compiled from January to April widened to around 69-percent compared
to the same period last year.
In the electronics and telecommunications sector, the U.S. trade deficit recorded around
one-and-a-half billion dollars during the January to April period.
This is a major turnout since the United States recorded a trade surplus in the field during
the same period last year.
Some U.S. media outlets cited the Korea-U.S. Free Trade Agreement, which took effect last
March, as the reason behind the trade imbalance.
Others argued that the monthly report only reflected the trade in goods.and added that
the trade balance could in fact be reversed, if the service and investment sectors are
included.
