K College is why we are who we are. When we begin looking how, and thinking how you sustain
a tutoring program, we knew we would need tutors who were committed, who were going
to be there. And staff from K College was there to help us, we sought them out, they
sought us out. And that is what I would say is the success of our program, is the help
that we get from Kalamazoo College. I didn’t know a lot about K College before
doing this but I’ve gotten to know more staff from K College. I’ve gotten to know
how they reach out into the community to help and I think it’s a reciprocal process where
we help the students who come to us from K College and without a doubt they certainly
help us. It’s a learning experience, it broadens their horizon about the worth of
all people and how they can help all people. I’m appreciative of K College and the Mary
Jane Stryker service learning component, especially of what they done and what they continue to
do. It motivates me to want to continue. I feel that we play into the social justice
role in that we are doing the things that are right for the population we deal with.
And that if what we do can permeate throughout the community then we have a big piece of
social justice that just because people live at Interfaith doesn’t mean that they can’t
be part of the larger cause. And it doesn’t mean that we can’t help the children at
Interfaith or the families at Interfaith, that they are just as important as anybody
else in this community to receive the kind of services that any other group receives.
Social Justice is, if we can get it to permeate our community or we can take pieces of it
and work it through the community, I think we have a better community, we have a better
recognition of the worth of everyone.
