July 8 1972, Bill Withers begins a three week stay at No.1 on the US singles chart with
'Lean On Me'
July 9 1954, Elvis Presley recorded 'Blue Moon of Kentucky', (the B-side for his
first single "That's All Right") at Sun Studio in Memphis, Tennessee.
July 10 2008 Christie's Memorabilia in London auction a rare 1/4 inch reel to-reel master
tape recording of the Jimi Hendrix Experience performing at the Woburn Music Festival in
1968 (it sold for $95,000), plus a Marshall amplifier used by Hendrix in concert (which
sold for $50,000) and a pair of his stripy flared pants (which took in $49,000).
July 11 1970, Bob Dylan's Self Portrait goes to No 1 in the UK, his fifth UK No.1 album.
His tenth studio album and second double album, featured mostly cover versions of well-known
pop and folk songs.
July 12 2007: In a ceremony at Buckingham Palace, Rod Stewart is awarded the CBE Order
of the British Empire by Prince Charles .

co founder and sole consistent member of The Byrds
July 14 1912, Born on this day,Folk singer and songwriter Woodrow Wilson '***' Guthrie
in Okemah, Oklahoma. Famous for his 'Dust Bowl Ballads' and protest songs in the 1930's
and 1940's, his work was a major influence on the young Bob Dylan.
