I am Kato Lone, I am a mechanical engineer.
My work on site is as a resident engineer, which means that I am responsible for quality assurance, quality control, then for the engineering on site.
The responsibilities of an on-site engineer are to make sure the contractors follow the drawings, the contracts,
and all of the documents that we gave them for doing the construction.
At the same time, it is our responsibility to interpret the drawings and the estimates that are made in engineering.
In university, I learned how to find technical solutions.
But it is also important to find solutions between people with whom you work, the different companies, and the different groups working together.
Gilbert, it is Kato, I am at the site, I am in my office....
An engineer’s wages that start after university are, on average, $40,000 according to Quebec’s engineer’s association,
and the average of all engineers who continue working in engineering is about $60,000.
If we are out on site to get things started, to do the commissioning, which I have done on many projects, we do a little labour,
we do checks on site and we start up the pumps, motors, water and oil pump systems, and we do that with a team of engineers and technicians.
But that is after the site is built.
What I like about working on site is that I always have the chance to go outside.
What I think is the most important trait to have is common sense.
You must be able to evaluate all problems and all suggestions for a solution and, in the end, make good judgements.
I am of the opinion that it is impossible for an engineer to work alone.
We always work in teams; we must always work with people from other disciplines in engineering and also with other groups.
Work hours in a factory or on site are not usually 9 to 5. You have to start early, I normally start at 7:00 and I leave between 4:30 and 5:00 p.m.
I try to finish my work after 8 p.m. every day, because I want to spend as much time as possible with my family.
