I'm Kyla and I'm with tuja wellness, we're here at the Greenery Garden Centre in Kelowna
and we're talking drought resistant plants that will grow anywhere
this is Gwen Steele from the Okanagan Xeriscape Association
she know a thing or two about plants
and we're going to steal some ideas from her
most people think cactuses when they think drought resistant plants
what are your thoughts there?
well personally i don't like cactuses and there's so many other plants to choose from
and I'm going to show you today what you can do instead
so these are are all hen and chicks
and these are succulents, sedums or stonecrops they're otherwise called
and all of these will grow in very poor conditions like poor soil
sun or part shade so they're really easy to grow they're great plans to start off the garden with
and you can make a beautiful garden just with a few nice rocks and a selection
of these
and you'll have interest all through the season, so these hen and chicks each one
of these little rosettes will start a new plant and kids absolutely love them
and these sedums
come in different foliage textures and colors as you can see
and then they also bloom
so there's blooming from June right through 'til frost
depending on the plant, the lower ones tend to bloom earlier
and these tall ones which can get to be about eighteen inches tall (oh wow)
those bloom in August, September and are really spectacular and the foliage is really
beautiful
so this could make you a really lovely garden just with those 2 species
and what about those who want a lot of flowers
well if you want more flowers in this particular garden or in a rock garden
kind of setting I've got some little ones here you can choose from
so they're all evergreen (oh wow) the foliage stays through the winter
which is another thing to look for
so I've got a little low growing potentilla
a dianthus
in the carnation family
perennial candy tuft
alyssum, perennial alyssum and thrift
and the thrift will, if you dead head it
it will bloom again for you and sometimes
the dianthus does as well so ok what about those who want
a lot of gorgeous colours and flowers for a long time? Well these ones are a taller plant
and they're cut flowers as well
they're good for cut flowers and if you dead head them they keep blooming
this one's blanket flower, Gaillardia
a type of coreopsis daisy
and this is a type of perennial salvia
so those growing together are lovely and they'll keep blooming
all the time and they'll also attract butterflies oh beautiful
what to avoid, what not to do? well here's an example of what to avoid
this is sedum, same as these
it's called Sedum acer
and each tiny little segment that breaks off can start a new plant in your garden
so it can totally invade your garden, it grows really fast
so always look out for spreaders
and don't put them in your garden unless you know what you're doing
and that's what you want to have happen
well if I had to choose I think I'd choose the hen and chicks
this is my favorite good choice yah
thanks very much for your time Gwen thank-you
