Carys was very kind, and brave to show me how to go about keeping bees.
And now, both myself and the bee hive are ready for some bees!
Hello Carys!
Ready for the bees?
I'm very excited!
Have you collected some wood?
Do these look O.K to you?
Those will burn too quickly...
This is what I meant by small twigs...
Next step...Wear your suit!
Your hood first, then your gloves...
Now, we'll take these with us...
There was no suitable place in my garden for the bees...
And so the hive is kept in the woods behind the house.
Ok Bethan...Are you ready?
Hello bees!
Here we go...
Give them a little steam, just to warn them.
Now, they'll be aware of what's happening to them!
Wow, look!
This is a frame with a lot of drones.
They mate with the queen bee...
There's enough here for her to have a good choice!
Lucky woman!
You have two of them picking your bum!
Here you have the queen cell.
That looks obvious doesn't it!
This frame is very important...
I'm going to place it in the middle of the hive.
So she's in there now?
Yes, she's in there... She'll come out in 9 days...
With the bees safe in their new home...
...It's time to put the hive back together.
Does it matter which way it goes on?
The slits must be opposite to the frames...
So, my bees are happy!
Welcome guys!
What next?
If you want to check they have enough food...
...In a week's time, the queen will have come out.
In three week's time, the queen will start to lay eggs.
The hive will be stronger.
So, I'll leave them be for a week? Then I'll ring you!
Ok, no problem!
