Narrator> Screams and cheers for all these hardworking students at
Steuart Hill Academic Academy, after they get a huge surprise
from Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake and the Oriole Bird.
All of these students are being honored because they are the winners of
the Mayor's Attendance Competition.
Steuart Hill Academy had the highest attendance increase since the start of the school year.
O-R-I-O-L-E-S!
Orioles! [applause]
And because these students worked so hard,
the mayor and the Oriole Bird gave them O's backpacks, a Baltimore Orioles t-shirt,
and a hat to match.
Steuart Hill Academy principal, Dr. Tanyaneka Lipscomb,
says her students worked extra hard.
Lipscomb> "Today we are celebrating two events.
"Steuart Hill having the most improved attendance in the entire city.
"Last year, attendance here at Steuart Hill was about 88%.
"Now, on average, we're at 92-93%, which is a great improvement.
"As you know, when students come to school, that's when learning is able to take place.
"I'm just excited as a first-year principal, having the opportunity to demonstrate
"my leadership, with the support of my network team and my assistant principal, Mrs. Page.
"We're here to make sure that students come to school each and every day,
"and implement strategies to encourage students that school is fun.
"We celebrate through certificates. We have a monthly bulletin board where we advertise
"students' names with perfect attendance, and then we also have a connection where we
"collaborate and celebrate teacher attendance as well."
Narrator> Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake also congratulated Steuart Hill Academy students
for a job well done,
adding that hard work always pays off.
Mayor> "It's very important for our young people to be in school every day and on time.
"And I know it's hard work. I have a little one in fourth grade,
"and it's an effort every day, but it's an important effort,
"because that's how we make sure that our young people reach their fullest potential.
"If you're not in school, you can't learn.
"If you can't learn, you're not going to be successful.
"So, I wanted to thank the principal, Dr. Lipscomb, here at Steuart Hill
"for her leadership in making attendance a priority."
Narrator> Now these students, along with every other Baltimore City Schools student,
are gearing up for the mayor's next attendance competition,
which will target elementary school students.
The school with the most improved attendance between October 15th and November 30th
will win a holiday party with the Baltimore Ravens, a $1000 grant from Comcast,
in addition, 5 families from the winning school will also receive a $100 gift card
from Under Armour.
And that's not all.
Teachers from the winning school will receive Lakeshore gift certificates.
Now that's something to cheer about!
