Let me make sure my screen sharing is working... this is the second time I'm recording this
picture, because the first time the screen sharing didn't work... it was really awkward.
Cool, so this is working pretty well. So I wanted to apologize to you guys first and
foremost for not being there on Thursday. I had something come up at my other job that
I thought I was going to be able to get out of where I had to be on a call to a client
in South Korea, so because of the time difference the call was after business hours for us.
I had originally arranged for someone to take my place on that call, but they ended up getting
sick and it was kind of a mess and kind of last minute and I'm really really sorry about
that, guys.
I also wanted to apologize for those of you didn't see my name and my face next to the
announcement I posted about not being able to be there to lecture. When I get announcement
from Reggie or when I see things that you guys post or send on Canvas, it always puts
your name and your face next to it so I definitely thought that would be the case for my announcement
as well, I'm so sorry for everyone who thought that class was cancelled. Again, I really
apologize- I will make sure in the future to explicitly call out that I am the person
posting the announcement.
All in all, Thursday was kind of a mess, but we're doing out best to make up for it now.
So this is the lecture that I wanted to give you on Thursday. This element of the Branding
Proposal project that we're going to be talking about is the Promotions Plan, which is going
to be due on May 26th. We have completed the Theme Proposal, Project Timeline, and Finalized
Theme; you guys all did a really great job I'm really excited to see where you guys take
your themes, and then now is the Promotion Plan, where you are going to take that Finalized
Theme and show me- your designer- what you what to do with it. So, I am the designer
for the Northwest Wine Academy, if you were proposing this theme to the Northwest Wine
Academy, you would be giving me this plan in order to tell me how and what you want
to implement for Promotions. Plus anyone else on the implementation team in terms of food
and decor and whatnot. The biggest point of differentiation between your themes is going
to be the aesthetics, so we're going to be focusing a little bit on that, not least because
I am the designer so this is what matters most to me.
So again, the Promotions Plan is going to be your ideas for promotions for the Release
in keeping with your finalized theme. You must include examples and a written explanation.
So, I want you to create a document- and I'll show you my example in a moment here- that
includes a few specific things explaining what you want, basically. I want at least
20 pictures that you've found that have elements that you like for your theme, and the written
explanation is going to tell me what it is you like about these images and what connects
them in your mind.
This one must be turned in through Canvas. For the last two assignments, I wanted the
finalized theme turned in through an email to me and the timeline submitted through Canvas,
a few people turned in both through Canvas or both through email, which was fine, everyone's
going to get credit, however, it created a real challenge for me in terms of documenting
who had turned in what. So for this assignment I want it only to be turned in through Canvas.
Email submissions will get a firmly worded response from me saying please turn it in
through Canvas. It makes my life a million times easier when it comes to grading so I
don't have to hunt and find where you turned in what. Some people emailed me directly,
some people messaged me through Canvas, some people submitted through Canvas, and again,
everyone's going to get credit for that, it was my fault for not being a little bit more
clear on my expectations there. But that was that assignment, this assignment must be turned
in through Canvas- again, it makes my life a million times easier and when that's the
case I"m able to get my grading done more quickly which benefits you as well. That said,
if anyone has not received a grade yet for the last two assignments email me and I will
look into that specifically. I'm not 100% finished with grading I don't think, I need
to look into that again. And if you could help me out by letting me know if you haven't
been graded, that will be very helpful for me.
So speaking of turning the assignment in through Canvas, I want this only in two file formats.
You can turn it in to me through a PDF- and I'll show you an example of what that looks
like- or a Zip file which I will explain to you as well. If you guys have any trouble
zipping a folder or downloading or saving your file as a PDF, let me know. I can at
bare minimum give you some good Google keywords to help troubleshoot your problem, I'll talk
you through it if I'm able to.
This is due Thursday, May 26th. I realize that we've lost like, two days since I was
not able to be there last Thursday. Because of that, I will be grading this assignment
more leniently, and if you need an extension, especially since I'm posting this on a Saturday,
I know a lot of people get their work done on Saturday, myself included, so potentially
you're losing out on a big day in which you would be getting a lot of stuff done. Again,
let me know if you need an extension and we'll work something out.
Speaking of grading, major grading criteria- there's more to it than this, but this is,
you know, high level view- completion on time as always. Cohesiveness of vision- you're
giving this to a designer who has to be able to understand what you're asking of her. If
I don't understand what you're asking for in your promotions proposal, you will get
knocked down for that. I need you to be explicit and clear and I need you to include all of
the things that I'm asking for in order for me to be able to understand what you want
from me. Then implementability is another one. This has to be something that we can-
not super specifically be able to do, but it has to be somewhat realistic. If you're
asking for images that we have no way of getting something that like, like for example, we
ran into this issue before where we were curious about using some Chihuly glass. Dale Chihuly
does not want us using images of his work to sell our wines. There is no way, if your
theme is- and no body's is, but for example- if your theme was Dale Chihuly that we would
be able to implement that. That is simply not possible. So implementability is a part
of this assignment. Also, things like I'm going to mark you off if you want to get a
blimp. I want your mandate to be relatively reasonable, and if you have any questions
about what falls into that category, shoot me a message, but by and large, this is where
your finalized theme and the conversations we had regarding your theme proposals come
to fruition. You guys sent me three to five themes, we had a chat about all of them, I
might have given you some links to follow, some things to check out, some concerns I
had. And then it was kind of your responsbility to choose one that you thought would be reasonable.
Now is where you find out if that's the case. If you have chosen something that you cannot
make work, then you are likely going to be marked off for that, just because it is an
exepectation that when you proposed these themes to me it is more than a thought experiment,
this is a practical example of what you would do in a job.
Some of the required information in your write up- I'm going to need you to cover your aesthetics.
I need you to talk me through what you want. And I need you to give me twenty plus examples
of what that is. And again, I'll show you an example of all of these things in a minute.
The aesthetic examples must include a source. This is very, very, very important. If you
have saying to me, I want you to use images like this, I need to, as your designer, be
able to figure out where those images came from, see if I can use that actual image,
and two, get a clue as to maybe some other roads to follow to find images like that if
I can't use that exact image. It is my job, as the graphic designer to have that deeper
level understanding of legality and price, licensing, file quality, etc to be able to
determine what is a usable image and what isn't. That's not your job, that's mine. But
in order for me to be able to do that job, I need you to be able to include the source
of where you found these images.
I also need you to call out what you would do about decor, food, tagline, and promotional
materials. And again, examples coming.
Like now! Oh my. So this is my promotions plan. If you recall, I choose the theme of
Journey. So the very first thing that I included that you also have to include is an introduction
as to why you chose that theme and what it means to you.
*Reads intro* So this is kind of high level philosophy about what this theme is.
Aesthetics. *Reads aesthetics section* And
I provided a link to my examples. Note that this is not super specific. In a few ways
it is- but generally I pointed out a very general aesthetic, said what connects the
images in my examples in my mind- these are things that in my mind, they all have in common-
And this is a way that you could use them. So it's not super specific.
So this is my link to my examples. I used Pinterest, because for me, it's an easy way
to search for images online and then save them in one place, and what I really like
about it- let me find a good example- if you click the pictures, it takes you to the source,
so I didn't need to call out in my document what the sources for my images were. So a
couple of things you can do here. You can use something like Pinterest that has links
to the sources built in, you can download a bunch of pictures and then put them and
your document, your write up, all in a folder, and then zip that and submit it through Canvas,
or you can, in your document, give me a list of links to follow to your twenty examples.
It is up to you which ones you choose. And if you want to go about it in a different
way, you're welcome to do that as well- I just need 20+ examples with sources. However
you want to present that, let me know.
So these are my examples you can see, it is a lot of train tracks or paths or stairs or
whatever, the aesthetic is kind of gray, it's not super sunny. These I got from the Visit
Arizona ad campaign from a while back. I googled travel ad campaign and these came up and I
liked them. So I included those as well. I called out what I liked about them, which
was the fonts. So you can kind of continue down, see what's what, see what I picked,
see where Igot them from. And it's not actually that many pictures when you scroll through
it- you can scroll through it pretty quickly, and this is 48 examples. So I feel like 20
is a good bare minimum. I'd be happier if you gave me 30. If you gave me 40+, I would
be thrilled.
So promotions plan- so that was the aesthetics portion. Decor and Food *Reads Decor and Food
section* So this is a great example of what to do if you can't come up with a great solution. Like, Journey and food-
what am I going to say, lots of like road trip food, lots of sunflower seeds? That's
not great. So what I did and what you can do if you find yourself in a similar situation
is call out what you would like to do and why, in kind of a general sense. Even if you
don't have an answer that's in like super alignment with your theme, put something anyway
about what you would like to do in a general sense so there is some direction, and just
make sure it's not totally out of place with your theme.
Taglines, gave a couple of options there. And promotional materials, I called out- so
promotional materials, are everything you would want your designer to create or produce,
basically. *reads list*.
And then that's it. This is a page and a half with lots of formatting and styling. So it's
not that long. It provides a link to 20 plus examples with sources and it calls out all
of the things that I'm looking for. If I received this turned in on time, this is an A+ assignment.
So, grading criteria. *Reads first and seconds sections* This is the assignment that has
the most opportunities for you to knock your grade down. So bear that in mind; of course,
that said, I hearken back to what I said at the beginning of this lecture, which is because
I am unfortunately shorting you a couple of days, if you need an extension you're pretty
much granted that by at least a few days and I will be grading this much more leniently.
All of that said, I can't give you leniency if you don't ask for it- if you don't let
me know that you are having trouble meeting this requirements because of these things
which are absolutely my fault I don't know that you need it, so do feel free to reach
out and say 'Hey, I"m having trouble getting this assignment done on time" I am SO willing
to help you out with that- I really really want to. Do not hesitate to reach out to me
with questions, concerns, requests, anything you like. I'm going to be super available
to you guys. Because not only did I short you a couple of days, not being able to be
there and give you this lecture denies you the opportunity to ask me questions in person
and it denies me the ability to see what it is you guys need. I am staring at my closet
right now, I have no idea if any of you look confused, or if you need clarification, or
if you look bored and Ishould move more quickly. We are both at a disadvantage right now in
getting you the information that you need. So, again, let me know anything you need for
this assignment and we will work something out. And as always, if you don't do anything
for this assignment, you don't get credit for it.
Here are a few sources that I really recommend you check out. All of these are resources
for stock photos and art that have been released to kind of the Public Domain- Stocksy, the
top one, is the only one that is not free but it is very low cost so we can use that.
All of these are curated, beautiful images that are released under the license that we
can use, which is available for commercial use with modification. So if you source your
examples from these guys it's going to increase your implementability, which is something
I'm looking for very much. Another great option to do is to check out ad campaigns for something
related to what you're doing. So for example I googled- and I'll show you how to do this,
actually, because Google is a great resource as well. So, images.google.com. I checked
out travel ad campaigns, and I found those- yeah, here we go, they're like the first ones
that pop up- the Visit Arizona ones. Another great thing you can do is you can type in
whatever you're looking for, then you go to search tools, usage rights, and then labeled
for reuse with modification. All of these images are things we can use. They are free
and they're released under the license that we need. So this is another great option if
you just want to rely on Google.
SO something else you can do- this is from Pexels- go to Google, use the right licensing
requirements, click there, visit page, now you've got your source, copy paste that into
your document, or download the picture and say I source my images from pexels, and then
believe, if I'm correct, you can click a picture, scroll down, and there are tags taht you can
follow. So, cool, travel relates also to what I"m doing. And it pulls up more images that
may be related to what I'm looking for and may give me more options. So that's a great
way to go about finding your examples. And there's a ton of resources here for finding
your examples, I don't think you'll have any trouble getting to twenty. I found that 50
or so in my Pinterest board in under 20 minutes.
Again, how to contact me, directly through email and messaging me through Canvas are
the most reliable options. I will be there next Thrusday to answer any questions or concerns;
I have no doubt you will have plenty, I do not blame you in the least- this is not a
very effective communication style for a lecture I'm sorry we're having to make do with this,
I really appreciate your patience and understanding. And as always, by appointment, which- sorry,
lost the internet here. It doesn't come back, but what I was saying-> Is
a great option if you won't be able to make it to class next week- reach out and we'll
find a place and time to meet.
I hope you guys are having a wonderful day, and I'll speak to you very soon!
