Producing quality honeydews has been a passion in my family for over 90 years.
My favorite time of the day is early morning.
Seeing the production begin — the crop has come in, the harvest is here.
August is peak season for King O’ The West® honeydews,
and the Smiths grow the best honeydew in the world.
The reason our melons are the best
is 'cause they're grown in one of the premiere growing areas in the world.
The San Joaquin Valley is also known as the Salad Bowl of America.
So it has the most fertile ground in the United States.
The warm, sunny days and cool nights allow for a very efficient transfer of sugar from the plant to the melon itself.
Flavor is really, really important to us at Publix.
We want our customers to get a ripe piece of fruit.
So what we do a little different is we allow the melons to sit on the vine just a bit longer
to produce that maximum amount of sugar that we think our customers will appreciate.
When you're trying to select a ripe honeydew,
you always look for a creamy white appearance, a sticky feel to the exterior —
and that should give you a pretty good indication that melon is ripe and ready to eat.
Like candy.
The sweet flavor just hits you. We call it nature's candy.
No knocking. We do not knock on the melons.
Our relationship with Publix goes back over 50 years.
It's been a great relationship over the years because we see quality honeydews in the same way.
When it comes to honeydews, there's only one king,
and it's the King O' The West® honeydew grown by Turlock Farms.
In the southeast, you can only get that melon at Publix Supermarkets.
Publix. Where shopping is a pleasure.
