Hi. good afternoon today i'm gonna show you how to embed video or anything that you
can get an embed code four
on a web page resource on mycourses
now the first thing you might ask yourself is why in the world would i want
to embed something on mycourses instead of linking to it
well that's actually a really good question
let's talk just for a second about youtube
if you link students away from mycourses onto the youtube website you
lose all control over the material that your students are going to see on that
website
youtube has a nasty habit of recommending related videos based on the
content
tag or title of your video
can you imagine what kind of videos would be recommended for your students
if the title of your video was say fun or had the word fun in it?
i would be very careful about that
however
if we can embed those videos in mycourses
uh... we can maintain control over the information that's delivered to our
students
anytime we can deliver content
on mycourses and have some control over that instead of sending
students to an outside website that's going to be a positive thing
so I'm going to just switch here real quick over to my desktop
and i want to show you what embedding is so
here you can see i actually have a video that's embedded on a web page that i
created
this is a link
this is a link
this is an embedded video
so the embedded video plays within a player
uh... the link sends the students to a different web page
this is what's preferable it's the embedding which is what i'm gonna show you
so the first thing that we'll do is we'll start with what are continents?
which is a video that i found youtube on one of my favorite channels actually
cgp grain
and if i click this share button
it opens up some options here and then i click the embed button and it opens up the
embed code
below the embed code before we get too far it's important for us to look at
this at the options that we have below the embed code
the first one is
the most important one because it
is connected to those related videos if this is unchecked
than the code says
i'm not gonna
give you any related videos at the end of this video
probably the most important one of these four
h_t_t_p_s is less important. it has to do with the secure link between
your student and youtube
and while that sounds important, it actually isn't as important as you think
if you start having students telling you that they're getting an
error message like there's a mixed content
or uh...
uh...
private content or something like that then you might consider using h_t_t_p_s
it's an encryption actually is is what that means so it's not as important as
you think
the next thing is enable privacy enhanced mode if you click that it will
disable cookies from being downloaded to your students computer after they've
watched the video so it's kind of history thing in this case
uh... that's not important for us we don't need to worry about that because
we're not going to be sending students
to watch videos that we're worried that
someone wouldn't want to know that they watched
and then finally this last one is the use old embed code. this isn't really
that important for us because
this iframe type embed code is actually one that works on mycourses
if we change this, we check that, then we
we get a completely different embed code word starts with object
so it's just a different type of code
but mycourses will allow us to use this one
and the last thing that will talk about here it is the size of the player so you
can see that the width and the height change according to these numbers as i
click this
and we can get up to a very large player that's actually probably too large for
your students especially if they're on a reasonably small computer
and then the other thing we can do is we can actually change this to our custom
size where we make it the specific size
i'm kinda fond of these two right here in the middle
the six forty by three sixty or the eight fifty three by four eighty
and actually this is the one that i personally really like it's nice and
wide but it's not so big that it's going to be off the page for most people
so once i do that I'm simply going to copy the code
and I'm a keyboard shortcut person so it's
control on the pc or command on a mac plus the c
and that copies
and then i'm gonna go over to my course now that i have that on the
on my clipboard
and just on the week that i'm gonna do this I'm gonna embed this video i just click
add a resource
and choose
compose a webpage
and now i have
uh...
I'm gonna put the title of my video what are continents?
and I'm gonna just scroll down I'm gonna skip the summary box and I'm gonna click the full text box
and i'm gonna go-ahead and hit return about four times and when i click over to the
code you'll see why i did that
so if I toggle the html source
now i'm looking at the code so this is not the visual editor this is
actually the code editor
so everytime i hit return you can see this b_r right here and that
means hard return
so that means that i now have four spaces that i've hit return
and so i'm just gonna go to the middle here
and paste my code
so now i have my code in the middle with two
spaces at the top and two spaces at the bottom
that's important to me because if i need to come back in and put instructions or
something like that
uh... in in this webpage i have already have two spaces that i could click in
instead of trying to click a right next to the video
and then hit return usually that ends up deleting your video
and then you have to start over by re-embedding
some i'm going to click save and display
and nine times out of ten you're going to get a blank page like this
so i'll just hit refresh
and now my video shows up right there and you can see i have space here
and i have space here
so if i need to go back in and
update this resource
i can click and my cursor goes there
or i can go all the way to the bottom and click and my cursor goes there so i
have room to type on the top and bottom that was the purpose of the
hitting return
twice
so every time you go out of edit mode
then you're gonna have to refresh your page so there's my video
and let me switch back over here
so that wraps up how u embed videos on mycourses this is going to work on any
web page or object that will give you an embed code and it doesn't just apply to
mycourses this actually applies to other web pages
but if you can find the widget
or if you're gonna embed a google doc or something like that
uh... this is very handy for doing that
so the hardest part about this is actually just finding the code
