Today, January 25, renowned Brazilian songwriter and composer Antônio Carlos Jobim was born
in Rio de Janeiro in 1927. Also known as Tom Jobim, he transformed the Brazilian samba
music into bossa nova, which became popular around the world in the 1960s. Mr. Jobim’s
wonderful lyrics especially expressed the beauty of our avian friends and the exquisiteness
of the natural surroundings of Brazil. “The Girl from Ipanema,” which he co-wrote with
esteemed Brazilian lyricist Vinícius de Moraes, won the 1964 Grammy as Record of the Year.
Mr. Jobim was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1991.
