Welcome to the Superior Court of California.
This video is about resolving civil harassment disputes. If you feel harassed by someone,
or if someone says you are harassing them, this video may help.
One way to try to stop someone from harassing you is to ask the court for protection
under section 527.6 of the Code of Civil Procedure.
This protection is called a
civil harassment restraining order
or, in this video, sometimes just a restraining order.
A civil harassment restraining order says that a person must not do specific things
or go near specific people or places.
If a person disobeys a restraining order,
he or she can be arrested, put in jail, and fined.
A restraining order can help stop civil harassment.
But, getting a restraining order can be complicated, time-consuming, and expensive.
And, it may not stop the harassment or deal with the real cause of the problem.
Mediation is another way to resolve a civil harassment dispute.
In many situations, mediation can help both people get a better result
more easily, more quickly, and less expensively
than having a court decide whether to make a restraining order.
