You can expect your voice audition to consist of two rounds.
There is the first round and the round that we call a call-back.
I was very nervous for this audition and I normally don't get nervous for auditions.
The first round of your audition will be about 10 to 12 minutes in length.
You'll be expected to pick your first piece and the faculty will choose any subsequent pieces that
you may have on your audition program.
I was the first of the group, so they called my
name, came in, said hi to the pianist, and said hi to all 12 of the faculty members.
But it was a very relaxed environment. They made sure to chat with
me a little bit before I sang, so that I got used to the room and used to the people.
Now, after you're all done with the first round, we'll ask that you come
back in the late afternoon to the admissions office to see if your name is
in fact included on the callback list. During the callback session you'll be
coached by the Juilliard faculty on diction, acting, and languages, so this
is your real chance to get a taste of the Juilliard experience and really see
what it's like working with our faculty. The callback is a working session where
you're working with the faculty, so you can go ahead and change out of your
concert attire and change into something casual and comfy that you really feel good in.
It was very different. I actually wore this sweater! And I didn't expect it
to be so laid back because everyone said it's gonna be like a coaching but I
wasn't sure if that meant they were gonna yell at me and tell me what to do.
That's not what happened. I made sure to not play over all of the things that
happened, and, "oh, what if I did this wrong, and what if I did this wrong," I just thought, "what I did,
happened, and whatever happens is OK." And then I got some matzo ball soup.
