What is the Health Records Act, and what can it do for me?
The Health Records Act is Victoria's health privacy law. In Victoria, we have a special
law that protects people's health information. Health information can be very sensitive,
it can be very intimate, and it can be misused for discriminatory purposes. That's why the
government wanted people to have their health information protected by a special law. What
it does, is it allows people to get access to health information about them. So if you
wanted to go to your doctor or your dentist or your social worker, or any organisation
or person that keeps records about your health, you have the right to get copies of those,
or see them, or have copied forwarded to a new doctor, dentist etc if you want to.
It also sets out when organisations are allowed to collect information about your health,
and what they can do with it once they've got it. And what they mustn't do with it as
