Kirk: Captain's log. Stardate 4731.3.
The M-5 multitronic unit
has taken over total control of the Enterprise.
I can't run a starship with 20 crewmen.
The M-5 can.
That thing murdered one my crewmen!
Now you tell me you can't turn it off?
Sir, sensors are picking up 4 Federation ships.
Phasers firing.
Hit on the Lexington.
We're firing again, sir.
The Excalibur- a direct hit.
The Hood and Potemkin are moving off.
Phasers firing, Captain.
Lexington hit again.
There's your *** charge. Deliberate! Calculated!
That thing is killing men and women!
4 starships! 1,600 men and women!
It misunderstood.
I believe the only way to stop the Enterprise is to destroy her.
Request permission to proceed.
STARDATE UPDATE
Opening Comments Leonard Nimoy
Now we come to these interesting questions.
Can man be replaced by a computer,
and can the computer surpass man in capability?
Or is the computer limited to the knowledge
and imagination of the programmer?
Certainly, in the last 40 years, we've seen the advance of the computer
to a point that it's essential to our everyday lives,
and with every passing day we see computers that come closer and closer
to mimicking human behavior and thought processes.
If there's one thing we must remember, however,
it's that if man patterns his machines after himself,
they reflect his weaknesses as well as his strengths
and that the ultimate threat to mankind may very well come from
"The Ultimate Computer."

INSIGHTS: I'll play Sulu
I've been particularly touched by Asian-American men
who come up to me and tell me
that when they were growing up in Northern Florida
or in New Jersey or in Minesota
that they were the only Asian boy
in their community, in their class,
and the image that they usually saw of Asians
on television and in movies were pretty unattractive ones.
I was the only one that gave them a sense of pride,
a sense of wanting to connect with someone on the media.
And whenever there was game-playing,
they got to be Sulu.
And now here they are as young junior executives or young professionals,
and they would come up to me, dressed in their suit and tie,
and tell me how important I was to their early years,
and during their formative years.
And for me, as an individual,
it's very gratifying that I was able to make that contribution.

"THE ULTIMATE COMPUTER"
Kirk: Captain's Log, stardate 4729.4.
The M-5 computer has been installed on board ship,
and we have left the space station for test maneuvers.
I don't like it, Jim.
A vessel this size cannot be run by one computer.
He's a pretty honest guy.

INSIGHTS: I need a job!
Nimoy: When this thing came along,
it was my first crack at a long-running job,
at a job that had potential to run longer than two weeks.
And I had a family to support
and I had been working at a lot of other work
to support that family outside of acting.
I'd done some teaching,
I also drove some taxis for a while.
Kelley: When I went over to see about this,
I signed for 7 out of 13.
And I thought, "ah, that's 7 weeks work. "
7 solid weeks of work,
then I'll go back and maybe move on to a motion picture.
I was really trying to establish myself in motion pictures,
but that 7 weeks turned out to be
the end of the line, so to speak. That was it.
Nichols: I didn't read for something called "Uhura"
because she wasn't cast,
it wasn't cast, and it wasn't written.
So I read for somebody called "Spock. "
Koenig: So they were looking for somebody
who would draw the same kind of audience
that The Monkees drew.
And I guess I fit the bill.
So it's a hell of a reason to be cast in a role
that eventually became part of my life for 30 years.
Nichols: And I kept asking them, "well, tell me about Spock. What is she like?"
And they kept looking at each other, and they said,
"don't you know anything about the show?"
And I said, "No, I've been in Europe for 6 months. "
And they said, "Well, Spock is not female.
"Spock is male.
"Also, he's not of Earth,
"he's from another planet, and... "
and I said, "he's what?"
It came out, "he's got green blood and pointed ears. "
I said, "how do I read for that?"
Takei: My agent called and he said he's got an interview for me.
I thought, "fantastic. "
He said, "it's a science-fiction project. " I thought, "mm-hmm. "
And then he said, "it's being produced by a man named Gene Roddenberry. "
I thought, "who's he?"
"Number three," he said, "it's a pilot for a potential series. "
And that's when my ears perked up
because it meant, if it sells, steady employment.
Nichols: They let me suffer for about two more hours
before they said, "come on, I'll take you to lunch.
You got the part. You had it when you walked in. It was a great reading. "

I'm William Shatner,

Have you located the malfunction, Doctor?
As I suspected, it is not a malfunction.
M-5 was merely shutting down power
to areas of the ship that do not require it.
Decks 4 and 6 are living quarters...
fascinating...
fascinating. Fascinating.

Half Time Comments Leonard Nimoy
According to Starfleet records,
there were 12 Constitution-class starships,
and the Enterprise was one of them.
In this episode, we get to see
4 of the other vessels in the fleet.
Now, of course, we couldn't go to the expense of creating
4 new models to be used in the shots
where the Enterprise is being attacked.
Instead, our special effects team
simply shot the model of the Enterprise,
quadrupled the image, and presto! 4 ships.
If you look closely, you'll notice that we didn't even bother
to change the blinking pattern of the lights.
All 4 of the ships' lights blink on and off in unison.

INSIGHTS: Captain Koloth
The character's name was captain Koloth in "The Trouble with Tribbles,"
and he was what it describes.
He was the captain of the Klingons,
and he was the counterpart to Captain Kirk.
And of course they knew each other.
Ah, my dear Captain Kirk.
My dear Captain Koloth.
Campbell: A little aside is
that Gene Roddenberry and I and Mr. ***
had a 13-episode verbal agreement
that I would do Koloth in subsequent shows.
We Klingons are not as luxury-minded as you Earthers.
We do not equip our ships with...
how shall I say it? Nonessenals.
Because Mr. Roddenberry had gotten to the point where
he thought it was about time to have an adversary for Kirk
that would be kind of running, not every show
but 13 in the course of the year,
but he dropped the show before we ever had
an opportunity for that.
But that was marvelous part.
I expect you to assume full responsibility
for the persecution of Klingon nationals in this quadrant.
It wasn't a long role,
but it was a very good part,
and I regret that it couldn't have gone on,
because I remember Gene Roddenberry saying to me,
and Gene ***,
"how do you see yourself vis-a-vis Captain Kirk?"
And I said, "well, I see him,
"I have a great deal of respect for him,
"and the strange thing is I will protect him
"from anybody harming him
"because if anybody's going to kill Captain Kirk,
it's going to be me. "
Captain Kirk...
Our relationship will be a peaceful one.
Let us both take steps to keep it that way.

"The Ultimate Computer" is a story that was born
of the industrial revolution mindset-
that is, that man is in danger of being replaced
in the workplace by machines.
Whether it's the original punch card machines at I. B.M.
Or the robots in an auto assembly plant or M-5 on the Enterprise,
we've developed a fear of being replaced by our own creations.
In some ways, it's even reminiscent
of the railroad boom in the late 1800s.
Except in that case, it wasn't fear of machines replacing man,
it was fear of low-cost immigrant labor replacing Americans.
In any of these scenarios, the bottom line
is our fear of being rendered useless.
The fear of us all becoming captain dunsels.
