Welcome to the University of Iowa. Here there are over 500 student organizations
available to help you succeed in your passions.
You've been told the big one, but it's your first week here
and you're probably wondering what are some my options?
The Intramural Sports Program at the University of Iowa
hosts 42 sports and events
The big sports such as flag football, volleyball and
basketball to smaller sports, more unique things: canoe battleship,
where you try to sing each other's
canoes in the Field House pool. Darts and Billiards
and a wide variety of smaller sports. To get involved here at the University
of Iowa,
you can also becoming an intramural official if you're looking for an on-campus job,
and learn leadership qualities, conflict resolution while being connected to your
peers by playing intramural sports.
Be sure to check out everything we offer
through Iowa Intramural Sports and get involved.
I'm Andi, and I'm a supervisor at the rock wall
at the University of Iowa's Campus Recreation and Wellness Center
I'm a student at the University of Iowa. I'm majoring in art
and a minor in Mass Communications.
The one thing I love about the rock wall here is there's a huge climbing community.
Everyone is friends with each other, the staff is friends with
the guests that come to climb. It's just a great community to hang out with
and climb with, and it's also a really great exercise
I love working on campus because it's really easy to just hop on the bus
to come to the Rec Center and get to work, and it's also just
a lot easier to be on campus because it really helps work with your class
schedule to make sure that you can work
and go to class, and not feel overwhelmed by it.
I remember the first Walk It Out Fashion Show
and hearing about and thinking, "I have to part of this and it's fashion."
There's tons of people involved with putting this on.
There's food from all different cultures,
which is awesome - who doesn't like food?
And then there's a cause attached to it.
They're making a huge donation to the *** clinic for this event.
It's cool because people want to give money to something
on a local base and go to things that have a cause to it.
It's a multicultural fashion show that has all types of different cultures all different types of traditional and modern wear
and all the cool people on campus are going to be there.
My Name is Nick Koehn. I am the president of the Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity here at the University of Iowa.
My major is Pre-Med, Human Physiology.
I'm going to be a junior, and I am from Burr Ridge, Illinois.
The Greek Barbecue Event is really the
first welcoming experience here for the new class who are coming to the University
to be involved or just get a taste of what Greek life really is.
It's an excellent opportunity for anybody who's the least bit curious
to go meet some people and find out about the values
of the organization which they plan on
initiating into,
or perhaps joining and just meeting the people there and you'll find that in almost every
circumstance
whether they be from my fraternity or any other sorority,
or whatever it is, the values are very similar.
And the benefits are numerous.
I'm Carter Bell, and I'm a junior from Waukee, Iowa, and I'm studying Political Science.
I decided to run for student government at the end of my freshman year.
I knew people who were going to run with one ticket, and I wanted to be involved
in this group, so I ran with 38 other senators.
People probably see us most easily when funding student orgs.
That's we do and that is something that we take very seriously.
But we also try to promote
sustainability on campus and the different programs that we do. Right now we are working
on a crowd sourcing website where students can put their ideas out there,
vote other ideas up or down and things like that.
So one thing I do with student government is help with Hawkeye Caucus day. Hawkeye Caucus
is in April, and it's one day where we take
about 100 students (undergrad and graduates)
to the state capitol in Des Moines, and we advocate
on behalf of ourselves and the university.
It's really a great experience because you talk your legislator if you're from Iowa.
It's just a short conversation but it really helps the
legislators think of students when they're making decisions.
And there's no fact sheet, there's no statistic,
that can compare to students coming and talking to legislators
about why the university is so great.
A lot of people think when they hear sailing, they think of those big yacht boats, but we're sailing
these small dinghy boats they're called. They're like one and two man boats.
They're really fun, it's a really athletic experience because
you're sailing in high winds it's really intense.
but it's super fun at the same time. I had never been ins a sailboat before I came
to college so I really didn't know what to expect.
When I came here and just fell in love. Sailing has really defined my college career.
and it might sound kind of cheesy, but it just means a lot to me.
My name is Erin Larsen. I will be a senior this fall at the University of Iowa.
I'm from Waukee, Iowa, and my major is Child Life.
As a dancer in Dance Marathon, we have lots of
different things that happen. We have family events, and those are every couple months where
our actual Dance Marathon families come, and we do different things and dancers are
actually welcome to come too so they
get to meet our families and have fun doing things
that. Also, we have dancer meetings
about once a month where the dancers come and learn
what's going on with Dance Marathon, and then also, it all kind of culminates with the Big Event.
Which that's in February where we dance for 24 hours, so we don't sit down, we don't drink caffeine, we don't go to sleep.
And we dance for 24 hours all to raise money to support
for the kids who are fighting cancer. Dance Marathon for me opened so many doors
just really helped me find what I want to do, even just with my career, and with my life.
It's defined my experience here at Iowa.
For new students coming into the University of Iowa, just have an open mind. Say "yes,"
to everything. Go to that meeting, or go to that event that looks fun.
You'll get to find where your passion lies and something to really get you involved here
at the university that really just connects you and
creates your college experience.
