The wildlife code in Missouri does allow landowners
and property owners to trap and relocate
or dispose of wildlife that's causing damage on your property.
And there are several cage traps
or sometimes referred to as live traps on the market.
I'd like to go through some of these with you
and show you the advantages and disadvantages
of each one of these traps.
Some advantages to the double door trap
is it can be used to catch armadillos.
And when we're trying to catch armadillos
we're usually putting wings on each side of the trap
which means he can enter from either direction.
Some of the disadvantages of this trap is that
with both doors open sometimes an animal like a raccoon
will go in there, trip the trap, one door will fall
and he'll be able to get out before the other door falls.
Another disadvantage is the tripping mechanism
is on the outside of the trap and sometimes an animal
will brush up against the side of the trap
and prematurely drop the doors without going in to be caught.
I would recommend if you’re going to use this double sided
or double door trap to go ahead
and lower and lock one of the doors
if you're going to use this to catch raccoons or groundhogs
and there'll be a less chance of him escaping
or having the door fall on his back
and allowing him to back out of the trap.
If trapping anything other than armadillos
I would recommend a trap such as this one.
The difference is this one is a one door, one entry trap.
It's a little heavier type trap.
It also has a door that can be lifted on the back of the trap
where you can actually reach in and bait the back of the trap.
The trigger mechanism is also in the very back of the trap
which forces the animal to come all the way in the trap
and he's totally committed when the door falls.
They do also make some specialty traps
for instance traps made just for skunks.
In this case these two traps are made for skunks
and the only difference is that they’re fully enclosed.
They operate just the same as the one door trap,
it just keeps the animal, the skunk, calm in the inside the trap
and it keeps other animals, like dogs and cats,
from harassing the skunk and causing it to spray.
