NARRATOR: Haywood Community College's Professional Crafts program
was created in recognition of the Southern Appalachian Region's strong craft heritage.
The jewelry program prepares students to become professional metalsmiths.
The journey of the jewelry student begins with studio safety
and learning the proper use of tools and equipment.
The next step is to learn the major jewelry making techniques
such as fabrication, forming and embellishment.
In later semesters, students will be able to design and complete jewelry
or other metal forms, using the most appropriate techniques for the project.
Students will emerge from the program with a broad technical knowledge
giving them almost unlimited design options.
All of Haywood Community College's Professional Crafts program areas
include classes in 2 and 3-dimensional design,
20th century American craft history,
studio photography, and marketing and business.
These courses support the major studio areas,
and give the students the knowledge they need
to turn their craft-making skills into a successful career.
