Some information I can share with you on fire protection.
The reason that standard fire protection ratings are 12000 degrees for
thirty minutes is that
the average house fire does not get 1,200 degrees, and the heart of
the fire moves on within thirty minutes. Therefore, 1,200 degrees for
thirty minutes. If you're in an environment where you need higher fire protection
ratings - those are available also.
It's always listed on the side of the door
This is one hour for 1,200 degrees. You can get up to 1,500
degrees for more than an hour with certain manufacturers.
Fire lining is a must for a safe.
It's almost hard to buy a safe these days without fire lining. It's almost
like a kind of gypsum, and it's sandwiched between the carpet and the wall of the
safe, and what happens when
it's exposed to heat,
is moisture comes out of it,
and steam
cools the interior of the safe.
So after a fire,
not only can you expect water damage, but you can expect water damage
from steam
inside your safe. So please get to it as soon as possible and wipe them down
with a good gun oil.
The gasket also expands, so when the door is closed, it is absolutely airtight and
nothing can get into it. Fire lining is
a must when you purchase your safe. Please, spend a couple
extra dollars, make sure you get a good fire rating
in your safe, and you'll feel much better, and this will last you many lifetimes. Do
it one time the right way.
