Before we start massage, because Natalie might be experiencing an earache, we want to think
about, "I'm going to let go of your hands for one second", applying some heat. And,
we're going to use moist heat in the form of a washcloth and warm water. So, I have
had it dunked here in the water, and I'm going to wring it out. You don't want to put a dripping
washcloth on Natalie's ear, but we want to wring it out a little bit. Test, to make sure
that it's not too hot. So, make sure that feels comfortable, because you're going to
apply this directly to her ear. We're going to go ahead, "Natalie, can I put your arm
down, for just a second? Thanks, sweetie." And, we're going to apply it right to her
ear, right to her ear. And, you want to leave this on for about fifteen to thirty minutes,
on the ear that's experiencing an earache. So, if it's one ear, than you would do one
ear. If it's two ears, you would do both, for about fifteen to thirty minutes. Again,
checking in, make sure she's feeling OK, while she has the heat applied. And you never want
to leave the child unattended, when they have moist heat on their ears. So if it's fifteen
to thirty minutes, you're going to sit with the child the entire fifteen to thirty minutes,
to make sure that they're feeling comfortable, with the heat on their ear. Because it might
feel OK, initially, and then it might feel a little bit hotter, the temperature might
change. They might become uncomfortable. You want to be available to meet their needs.
So, sit with them while they have the heat on their ear. Again, for about fifteen to
thirty minutes, just to loosen up anything in that area, to help alleviate some of that
discomfort from an earache.
